Johannesburg - The ANC on Saturday praised an initiate by government to address problems in the farming sector.

"[We] welcome the Western Cape Farming Sector Engagement initiative by the national government... to address persisting problems of farm evictions, working conditions and the previous initiatives that sought to address farm workers problems," ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said in a statement.

The meeting held in Paarl on Saturday was led by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and attended by several cabinet ministers.

"The ANC is happy that representatives of various farmers organisations and unions were invited and participated in the discussions," Kodwa said.

"This will allow negotiations between the farmers organisations and unions to proceed smoothly."
