ANCYL: Give Limpopo learners free pass

2012-06-21 11:07

Johannesburg - The ANC Youth League on Thursday demanded that Limpopo learners still waiting for textbooks be given a free pass.

"We demand that all learners be given the obligatory pass as the situation is stimulated by the government itself," provincial spokesperson Klaas Nono Mabunda said in a statement.

"The lack of learner support materials particularly textbooks comes with a lot of misfortunes to learners in grade 11 and 12," said Mabunda. Entry to the institutions of higher learning was determined by pupils' performance on this term in the school calendar.

Mabunda said recovery plans during the remaining school holidays of this year needed to be developed.

"The league support the call by the South African Democratic Teachers Union in Limpopo and other affected unions on their demand for remuneration as concocting the recovery plan will mean that there will not be resting on the part of teachers this year."

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga apologised to Limpopo parents and pupils on Wednesday after learning of the non-delivery of textbooks for Grade 10 pupils in Limpopo.

"The situation is completely unacceptable. I have demanded a full report about reasons for this delay so that appropriate steps can be taken," Motshekga said in a statement.

The national department took over the running of Limpopo's education department in December, following maladministration.

Motshekga's office was informed that textbook delivery had been completed, but discovered delivery had in fact not taken place.

The department appealed to school governing bodies and opposition parties who had information on outstanding deliveries to pass it on so the matter could be resolved immediately.

I feel very sorry for those students, even if they were to receive text books now they are so far behind I doubt they could catch up in time. But to give them a free pass is stupid. What is the point of education - to pass or to educate?

      koos.vandermerwe.338 - 2012-06-21 11:15

With 30% as a pass, are there still some who fail to get 30%?

      Rob.Trianglem - 2012-06-21 11:25

One of these days they will be demanding grade 1 pupils be free passed to grade 8 as you dont have to be intelligent to be in the ANCYL which they prove beyond a doubt every F@@ken day.

      Dee - 2012-06-21 11:29

The problem is not of their making, but ANCYL should rather be asking that the affected kids get to repeat this year of schooling - and perhaps compensation for that. There are no free passes in life. All actions have consequences. Every vote their parents made has a consequence too. Give the kids the best opportunity to learn this lesson and get the full educational content of this year.

      Paul - 2012-06-21 11:40

Stupid is all the ancyl understands

      Squeegee - 2012-06-21 11:42

Qualification without education. Mmm... future ANCYL members.

      Taetjo - 2012-06-21 11:44

It'll be very interesting to see the future repercussions of al of this. And this time, we will not be blaming apartheid but the ANC. Oh well...

      smili.fication - 2012-06-21 11:45

You get what you vote for - I am sorry to all those who never voted cANCer (mostly the kids themselves).

      phillip.beukes.5 - 2012-06-21 11:45

...and then you make the minister pay (from her own pocket)for all their extra study material, and teachers that need to work extra time, to help them catch up the lost work...

      Bryan - 2012-06-21 11:47

The cock-up lies squarely at the door of the ANC government who have once again, failed to deliver the most basic of services.. Be that as it may, even if the students had the required text books, the "pass" rate would still be dismally low because the real reason for failure in this countries education system is a lack of attitude and an excess of laziness. The ANC have created a complete sense of moral decay and the youth masses have accepted it as the norm!!!

      fussed.anderson - 2012-06-21 11:48

More uneducated idiots in the making, thanks to uneducated polititions

      msendi - 2012-06-21 11:49

      ANCYL is an embarassment…

      alan.gernet - 2012-06-21 11:56

Clearly the ANCYL twat that thought that one up, also got a 'free pass' in his/her own education, which has now come home to roost.

      christopher.columbus.3950178 - 2012-06-21 12:03

And then we have R16 billion to lend to the imf??? priorities are backwards!

      JaredVN - 2012-06-21 12:06

So I assume that the "lênnas" who fail, as well as their outraged parents, will vote for a party other than the one that caused this fiasco - the ANC - in the next election, thereby avoiding a repeat of this disaster? Didn't think so. Oh well, who cares then? It's not the lack of textbooks that make those who fail or their parents stupid, but rather their stubborn refusal to help themselves. Let's move on - some people don't deserve an education.

      bheki.khumalo.58 - 2012-06-21 12:07

      well said rene!

      alan.gernet - 2012-06-21 12:19

@Christopher Columbus. The loan to the IMF is an Investment (and a good one according to Economists). That has no bearing on the Education Dept's inability to plan and perform.

      christopher.columbus.3950178 - 2012-06-21 12:31

@alan...Should we not first invest in the future of our children?? Who in turn will reinvest in this country? We saying we have no money for health care books etc etc. but We can find R 16 billion to lend the IMF. Lets lend it to the people of South Africa first. Then if we have money left we can lend to the IMF to invest!

      tonyzr2tx - 2012-06-21 12:39

@Christopher, If you don't get the big picture yet you never will.

      alan.gernet - 2012-06-21 12:42

@Christopher - it's not about not having money for the School books. It's the inefficiency of the Dept Education that has failed the kids. BTW The loan to the IMF is regarded as a very important gesture, and will doubtlessly put us in a more favourable position to loan money in the future. Listening to Financial Guru's - the Loan is one of the better moves that the ANC have made in many years. But I agree wholehertedly about the Education Priority issue. There is NO FUTURE for anybody in SA without an education. Plain and simple. The ANC have gnored this most important building block from day 1. I suspect that the logic was to keep the voters uneducated, but that is coming back to bite the Govt. now with the rowdy youth who are mainly uneducated and therefore easily swayed by rhetoric.

      Oom - 2012-06-21 12:50

I love this word “DEMAND”. It implies that you will do what I said, OR..?? Why don’t the parents of these poor kids, that are probably going to fail, because they know that they are not expected to pass, and they have an excuse, and the ANCYL said so, Why don’t their parents vote for another party..?? This will wake the system up...BUT NO.. they will continue to vote for the very same morons as they always vote for, so they will always get what they have always got and they will continue to blame it on the past and apartheid and racism and the DA...go figure... Give them a free pass that’s OK...and next year when there are no books again, just pass them again and again until they all have matric. BEE will protect them when they go out to into the work place...cool hey..???

      christopher.columbus.3950178 - 2012-06-21 12:58

@alan...I understand where you coming from, but kids needs books to learn, unfortnately the education department are useless, so we need to see that they get these books. Otherwise all these kids are going to fall off the wagon, and just be part of the criminal statistics. How long must they wait to get books then, a year a couple years? This is the time they the most influenced in their lives, lets influence them in the right way. We need to police the money and make sure the kids get it. We must also play a bigger part in this country and not just think because I am paying my taxes that's enough, unfortunately thats not going to work.

      jruppersberg - 2012-06-21 13:10

Sipho was in grade one when he came home and asked his mom: "Mamma, today the teacher showed us how to write our names. I got it right on my first try! Is it because I'm black or because I'm clever?" His mom replied "It's because you are clever my boy!" The next day Sipho asked his mom "Mamma, today the teacher taught us how to count to 10. I counted to 8 without help! Is it because I'm black or is it because I'm clever?" He's mom replied "It's because you are clever my boy" The next day Sipho again asked his mom "Mamma, today the teacher took all the boys to the bathroom to show us how to use the urinal. She walked from one boy to the next and helped us peepee. When she got to me she said "My Goodness but you have a big peepee!" Is it because I'm black or is it because I'm clever mamma?" He's mom replied "No my son..... It is because you are 18 years old..."

      algreco.sinioriti - 2012-06-21 14:00

ANYCL IS WAY TOO SMART!!! No Education = Voter Fodder!!!

      danny.levin.351 - 2012-06-21 14:55

Rene, sadly for a long time (18 years) the goal is to pass people though the system and give them certificates even though they cannot achieve more than 30% marks in a good day. these semi-literate matriculants then get dumped into the work-market and taken into higher education institutes despite being unsuitable for either. Yes, there is a percentage of high achievers which deserve praise and recognition but they are a very small minority. The majority of graduates are simply fast-tracked only to suffer later in life the consequences of a poor education. Worse, some of these fellows become "educators" and "teachers"...

      Sharon - 2012-06-21 17:02

ancyl would like to give them university degrees as well,i stated in a earlier comment that you get what you vote for, perhaps these poor students should go home and ask their parents what they were thinking when they voted these clowns into power

      MagdaKus - 2012-06-21 17:13

I think they should get free school fees & materials they wasted this year... however a free pass would mean being given a 100% meaningless qualification... i.e. ANCYL asks that the pupils are given something 100% worthless...

      Honker - 2012-06-22 15:17

@Dee The problem is the big joke called liberalism. It creates a sense of entitlement and infantiles the population to the point where they they expect "big dad" government to provide for them in situations where they are supposed to be given positive motivation to be self-sufficient. Liberalism will destroy this country.

      mukosit - 2012-06-22 19:58

      Funny.

      Keith - 2012-06-23 06:03

Does it matter, with such low pass mark, whether pupils get a 'free' pass?

  • clay.gray.505 - 2012-06-21 11:13

Lack of textbooks impacts the economy. Giving learners a free pass does the same. There's no logic in this suggestion. How does a free pass benefit the students?

      jomah.semur - 2012-06-21 11:43

@Peter; I suggest the following: 1. The affected children get to repeat the year at the ANC's expense 2. The ANC should pay the effected pupils compensation, maybe in the form of pocket money/wage youth subsidy 3. Free ANCYL t-shirts (made in China) should be handed to the pupils to burn!

      koos.vandermerwe.338 - 2012-06-21 11:44

Why are the parents not doing anything? They voted these incompetant things into power. They are quick to burn, destoy and throw stones when they don't get free electricity but when it come to their children's education they are quiet?

      fussed.anderson - 2012-06-21 11:50

Big savings on text books then. No need to purchace them in the future

      cuthbert.murwisi - 2012-06-21 12:43

A free pass increases the number of tertiary education drop-outs and also increases the number of idiotic tertiary students demonstrations calling for another free pass when these "free pass" beneficiaries are in college / university.

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-06-21 12:46

Well peter, I think jomahs answer was very logical. You asked the question, how about a response? I hope you don't think a free pass would be of any benefit to a child - surely??

  • jackie.stone.501 - 2012-06-21 11:17

Very irresponsible indeed. This could make it very difficult for matriculants from limpopo to be admitted to higher education institution even those that passed fairly

      ackwell - 2012-06-21 12:22

Give them a pass and also a pasport to Somalia !

      Junebugg - 2012-06-21 17:00

Never mind that our government go 17 Million to pay Beyonce for 2 hour performance...Sick

      Jellyarse - 2012-06-22 11:53

No Jackie, these Pigs from the ANCYL want everything for FREE and are not prepared to work for anything, other than to incite racial hatred. Let them take it to the ultimate level, WHY NOT JUST HAND OUT FREE DEGREES TO THEM, That way, they will have their qualified leaders in place to further Fu*k up this country and quite frankly, they'd do no worse than the current, corrupt, cANCerous, idiots running this country!

  • bulelani.mbalo - 2012-06-21 11:17

department of education is not fair. how on earth let the students study without having text book for six month? however at the end, when they want to apply for tertiary education they will be expected to meet the requirements.

      anthony.denozo.336 - 2012-06-21 12:02

When I was in school and if there wasn't enough text books to go around we photocopied, shared and made notes, there is no excuse if the person really wants an education.

  • joe.farmer.92775 - 2012-06-21 11:18

Free and dom a dangerous combination

      Rodney - 2012-06-21 11:37

This is the kind of comment that comes from a lack of education and now you want all your buddies to be in the same boat. No free passes, too many have been handed out already. Time to frikkin work for what you want.

  • Teuneman - 2012-06-21 11:20

      Day after the exam?

      alan.gernet - 2012-06-21 11:58

Thay have been complaining, but the Govt. has still not solved the problem. Cant rush these things y'know!

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-06-21 12:50

Priorities are important - ministers in education first needed house upgrades, salary increases, more status reflecting vehicles - only once those important issues were dealt with could they consider sorting out the pesky text books. Probably needed a week at a 5 star lodge to discuss how to deal with the problem.

  • jus.manning - 2012-06-21 11:21

OMG!!! The Youth League are so short sighted. A free pass??? Imagine a doctor operating on you one day, procedure being a heart transplant, he didn’t get the material to learn it, but he is qualified anyway, it’s the governments fault. IDIOTS!!!

      sylvia.shaw.7 - 2012-06-21 18:39

Trust the ANCYL to come up with such a dumb solution to the problem.

  • catgirl1971 - 2012-06-21 11:21

How frikken difficult is it to achieve a 30% 'pass' mark? If these so-called teachers had any motivation they would find a way to educate the learners without the textbooks. Go to a library and copy relevant information regarding the subject. But no it's easier to rather sit back and demand a free pass. What a joke.

      koos.vandermerwe.338 - 2012-06-21 11:26

The principals don't care. It is not part of their unionist job description.

Why don't they just abolish schools altogether and give all students a matric certificate? That is about what the certificate is worth these days. Then all newly matriculated youth can each get a free farm and SA will be OK!!!! Stuffing imbeciles...

      koos.vandermerwe.338 - 2012-06-21 11:29

That will be to easy. What will happen to the jokers at the ancyl?

      alan.gernet - 2012-06-21 12:12

You have hit the nail on the head exactly Sharon. An EDUCATION should be the tool to enable you to be productive. This is exactly the problem in SA - we can never uplift anybody (except politicians and BEE beneficiaries) without proper educations. As you say - the Govt education (when it works) does not help the learners to equip themselves for an enriching career. The difference between PVT and Govt education is Night and Day! So, although the Govt loves to see (manipulated) pass rates, the Govt. Matric Cert is worth about the same as a Zim Dollar. And when you see the stupidity of comments made by the ANCYL and many ANC Ministers even, you realize how retarded our population is in general. The CORNERSTONE of SA's hope to improve the lot of the average citizen is education, yet that is one of our worst failings in SA. In the absence of education, Idiots will multiply.

Anyone with a grade one pass in the ANCYL sounds over-qualified to me.

      Juan - 2012-06-21 11:51

  • rob.bayliss.94 - 2012-06-21 11:44

  • Ryan - 2012-06-21 11:44

This is a deliberate attempt to keep students uneducated so the ANC can keep their vote count up from the uneducated masses. They should rather ASK (as oppose to demand) for text books - I've a few that I'd happily donate.

just like the ancyl. Put more people in high positions without a brain and dumb. That's what will happen. Yes it did take very long but what will a free pass help. They will still stay dumb if they don't pass with studying.

You can clearly see that Klaas Mabunda and his allies had to many obligatory passes, that is clear in this type of demands. You can only gain knowledge and skills through learning and not free passes. If one could "buy" skills and knowledge I would have given 90% of my income to government to spend it on the people, although you will not have anything if the current attributes aren't changed.

      fanie.dutoit2 - 2012-06-21 11:57

You can't think for yourself, or other, if you are given free passes. Never learned to think. Even animals think to feed themselves, they do not get anything mahalla

Wahahahahaha! Free pass for Matric. Oh what the hell, give it to them. Matric doesn't mean jack $*%& anyway. It's not like they are going to get a job with it or anything. I also think we must give free passes for engineers, doctors etc - seeing that there is a skill shortage.

  • robert.laas.9 - 2012-06-21 12:00

If you can't get the text books make a plan! Find it hard to believe people will just sit and wait. Teachers could pay more interest in their students and make a plan to get them appropriate study materials but no let's wait and do nothing its fun. Lekka dof ne

      Carl - 2012-06-21 20:47

The teachers don't go to school.

  • jp.roux87 - 2012-06-21 12:10

And then they fail the next year? I feel so so sorry for the students but, this is not a solution. Day to day thinking, where is the foresight?

Amazing! The learners suffering are most likely children of parents pro-ANC. Wake up call much?
