ANCYL calls for early matric results

2012-01-16 15:27

Johannesburg - Releasing matric results in December should be considered to avoid congestion at universities, the Gauteng ANC Youth League said on Monday.

"The release of the results a day before the opening of the tertiary institutions contributes to the chaos that is characteristic during admissions as has been seen in UJ [the University of Johannesburg]," ANCYL provincial secretary Ayanda Kasa-Ntsobi said in a statement.

Gloria Sekwena, 47, died in a stampede at the university on January 10 while accompanying her son to see him through the applications process. More than 20 people were injured.

"This [admission process] was a mere exercise of a constitutionally enshrined right to education, which unfortunately ended tragically," Kasa-Ntsobi said.

"The... situation has, however, provided some important lessons about the challenges we face and some of the concrete actions government must take to resolve the long term problems facing our education system."

She said the incident highlighted the need for the government to create a new plan to cater for tertiary students across the country.

"Part of the reality is that you still have provinces such as Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape which do not have tertiary institutions," she said.

"Our call to government is that there must a concerted effort to broaden the frontiers of opportunity."

On Thursday, ANCYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu said the department of higher education needed to acknowledge that there was a critical lack of space in tertiary institutions.

He said the ANCYL would meet Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande to emphasise the need to build new universities.

"[We will] also propose a national summit to discuss and come [up] with solutions on how best South Africa addresses the reality of many students and fewer spaces and opportunities at post-secondary level," Shivambu said.

Hallo it's Monday 16 2012 wake up children

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-01-16 15:57

True Leonard, its insanity. Its like admitting "your" people are not clever enough to achieve an mlungu pass rate of 40%, what an insult. Anyway, whats wrong with UNISA, 1000's of these kids could study from home a lot cheaper than going to UJ I would imagine? I got half my diploma through TechRSA, another correspondence option. Then you can earn while you learn as well. Anyway, it seems most of the degrees the okies want are basically useless in terms of qualifying one for a job?

      Francois - 2012-01-16 16:08

They should have been awake already in 2010 with their grade 11 results and applied. Floyd should also wake up - the results were not released a day before the stampede, if it was how could people travel for three days to get to UJ to register. And someone should not suddenly get university exemption on his last exam. And someone must not suddenly decide to go to university to enlist for Medicine with a pass in Maths lit. Both Minister of Education must wake up -oops no they will not. they are in SADTU's pockets and need to make the population feel good about themselves and the best way is to make them feel that they are educated if they don't know 70% of the content.

      Myvision - 2012-01-16 16:31

The cadres intend to enrol in matric but are worried that the results come late, so until that is addressed they are not going back to school.

Malema, Jesus loves you, Malema, Your mother loves you, Malema, Your father loves, Repent, Manpara, repent, Repent, Ignorant, repent, Repent, Negligent, repent, Repent, Liar, repent, Repent, Thief, repent, Repent, Baby Killer, repent, Repent, Genocider, repent! Okai, stop the bus, how can you say all that? Lets have a look: Malema is Ignorant that the Failed Communist Countries like the USSR, China, Vietnam, Cuba, etc, employed Central Control Economies ( CCE ), with full and total nationalisation. Negligent - as the head of an organization, it is his duty to be fully informed of the economic history of total disasters of CCE. He does not know that Gorbachov announced reforms away from nationalization – in the early 1980’s! He is a Liar, because these are not his ideas, these ideas have been around for over 100 years. Thief, he has stolen the PEOPLES money – that is how bribery and corruption works. Baby Killer, as a member of the ANC – Abortion Murder Genocide, is guilty of the Genocide of 800 000 black babies in government hospitals! Genocider, as a member of the ANC – Abortion Murder Genocide, is guilty of the Genocide of 5 Million Aids sufferers which were refused medication. Repent, Manpara, Repent!

This John sounds like a real sicko who should never be left with children unsupervised.

      Silvana - 2012-01-17 05:16

@John If you and I were at a party, I would go out of my way to avoid your company. Your postings are stale and so unclever. You post the same crap in every news item. If you have an original opinion, voice it, otherwise stick to thumbs up or down.

  • George - 2012-01-16 15:36

Well done, Who told you to say this

  • Sam - 2012-01-16 15:39

This is so true.... why were they release so late anyway

  • Merkwaardig - 2012-01-16 15:43

Raising the passing mark to the international norm of 50% will also help...

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-01-16 16:00

As far as I can remember an E (40% +) was considered a pass. (Back in the 80's) But ja, even that was too low, only 33% of university starters went on to get their degrees. 50% sounds much more logical - but do the ancyl posess logic?

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-01-16 16:13

@chumscrubber - you never got admitted to university with an E aggregate... and in some courses (medicine, engineering, etc.) an aggregate of 80% was no guarantee for acceptance. And even then there was a significant number of kids dropping out during the course. But that was when SA produced world class doctors, engineers.... not so sure anymore...

      George - 2012-01-16 17:14

Slow down big boy, one thing at a time. These people can only do one thing at a time

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-01-16 17:50

Thanks frans - I remember now, a D average (50%) was required - but you could have an E in those results and still get in - depending on what course you were doing. It was too low even then, as 66% used to drop out. I was one of those - on a one year course! I then went on and got a diploma - I think more kids should start at diploma level, then more would pass. Not all of us are academic enough to be graduates, and graduates don't necessarily do better in life at the end of the day. You just need to work hard and life will turn out fine - generally...

  • alanaR.rodriguez - 2012-01-16 15:53

...not to be a racist, but the previous government had these results out in Dec every year!! Our current government needs to catch a wake up!! There was a reason WHY the previous government did certain things in certain ways.... not everything had to do with apartheid!!

      Katlego - 2012-01-16 16:10

FYI post 1994 till around 2006 the results were realised just before new year in december

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-01-16 16:15

This is true. It was out well before Christmas every year... the exams end in the beginning of November, how long do you need to mark exam papers?

  • LouisC - 2012-01-16 15:54

Spot on! In the mid 90s when I finished high school, we got our results early in Dec. Not sure WHY this had changed. Perhaps looking into the department's admin?

      Perfume5 - 2012-01-16 16:10

      Likewise :)

  • spartanx93 - 2012-01-16 15:58

and I call for this merry band of bandits (ancyl) to be disbanded!

  • Chumscrubber1 - 2012-01-16 16:02

Release them as soon as they are available as far as I'm concerned. Can't remember now, but I think we used to get ours before xmas in the 80's. At least for a change the ancyl is taking an interest in issues that are affecting the youth, and not just politics.

  • Shirley - 2012-01-16 16:08

To ancyl: Mob mentality, lack of self control and the fact that there are far too many students given access to these institutions by lowering standards and pass rates is the major cause for these problems! First each thew children to act in an orderly fashion and get the CORRECT marks before they can apply. But as usual what the ancyl wants it normally gets! Wonder how many of them have legit university passes?

  • Newsreader - 2012-01-16 16:10

The 2012 matrics must know what there end of the year results are now? mmmmm I might as well just go and tell my boss that I have already forcast our turnover for the end of the year!! Oh and its also WP thats going to win the Currie Cup!

      Newsreader - 2012-01-16 16:40

      Well my sangoma told me!

  • myLeftnut - 2012-01-16 16:11

I'd be interested in finding out how many bigwigs in ANCYL actually have a matric! Julius ... I doubt it lol

  • braamc - 2012-01-16 16:19

    Shoe, the intellectuals then

  • mike.bester1 - 2012-01-16 16:22

Only a bunch of uneducated non disciplined hooligans will storm a university, screw them, they do not deserve to go to university or collage. Even if they are let in, they will find something to complain about, if they get oranges for lunch, they will complain, they want apples. How the F is the ANCYL anyhow!

  • jackivdm - 2012-01-16 16:23

It's not really going to help, since the admissions offices are still closed anyway. The only solution is not to allow late admissions. Let them apply with everyone else before the deadline for the following academic year. More universities are also not going to help, not even all the people currently attending universities finally actually graduate. There is a huge need for skilled artisans and technicians. Build technical colleges and technicons.

  • Deon - 2012-01-16 16:25

No, close all univ. applications by end of September the previous year.

  • John - 2012-01-16 16:26

For the first time the ANCYL talk sence.

  • Norman Leslie - 2012-01-16 16:27

How about releasing Julius Malema's results from that university that kept him from the trial?

  • Comrade - 2012-01-16 16:28

ANCYL ...... WHO ARE YOU AGAIN....OH...NO-ONE!!!!

      Newsreader - 2012-01-16 16:43

ANCYL and GRETIL... Have you never heard of them? They get lost and then eat a witches house made of sweets who....

      Newsreader - 2012-01-16 16:45

but then there is also the ANCYLODERM which is a haemaroid cream. You can also use it for fever blisters but best not to use the same tube for both!

  • PyroSA - 2012-01-16 16:31

You can already get submission based on your Grade 11 marks. You might improve on those marks, but it already is enough for many students.

  • Jaco - 2012-01-16 16:48

I wrote matric in 1974 and our results were only available at midnight 31 December. Those days we knew we had to qualify by June or the latest the the Sept exams to apply to a university. If you did not qualify, you had to wait a year. We knew the rules and abide by them. If your parents did not had the monet or you did not qualify for a student loan, it was tough cookies, you could not study at a university. Sorry that is the the real world. The youth today demand to further their educationm, but they are not prepared to work for it. This comment exclude the youth that worked hard and qualified for university admission long ago. We are sitting with a huge bunch of undisiplened youth, demanding free education and do not have the ability to work towards a better life. My son finished his studies last year, not even a quater of the ones that started passed all their subject everytime, 50% droppedout before the end of the first year. What does it tell you?

  • Devon Roman - 2012-01-16 17:24

In 2005 when I was in matric, we got our results late in December... Why the DBE changed it, only they will know, because we did'nt have any of these stampedes that have become the norm of late. It will take a tragic turn of events such as the UJ stampede for something to be done...

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-01-16 17:55

They probably changed it because it was the way white people did things, you know, anything we did needs to be changed - I think thats the logic these geniuses use.

  • sven.nel - 2012-01-16 17:51

As has been discussed before. Universities accept your end of year grade 11 marks and even your mid year matric results as submissions. There never has to be congestion as learners have a whole damn year to submit something. This drive from the ANCYL is simply a fanfare over nothing to try and stir the pot once again. I will agree that the standard of education has dropped, but that has nothing to do with the late release of matric results. I also agree that additional universities need to be built to house the number of uneducated borderline students the government has tricked into thinking they qualify for tertiary education.

  • Simon - 2012-01-16 21:26

When will the people of this country understand we do not need more university graduates, we need more artisans. Degrees are unfortunately not for the masses. We need to make things, build houses, plumb and wire them. People with degrees cannot do this. Having dirt under your fingernails after a hard days work is nothing to be ashamed about

      george.slade.161 - 2012-10-18 17:36

Fully agree --Send the ANC Ykids to robben island --They Qualify
