ANCYL members died in bus crash

2012-06-24 13:08

Bloemfontein - Three ANCYL members died when their bus overturned outside Bethlehem in the Free State, it said on Sunday.

"This is a tragedy for the nation, as these are young cadres of the ANCYL who in their commitment and dedication always responded to the activities of the ANCYL in the province and country," it said in a statement.

"The NEC [national executive committee] of the ANCYL conveys its deepest condolences to the families of the comrades... and conveys wishes for a speedy recovery to those who are still in hospital."

The provincial branch of the African National Congress Youth League said the bus was transporting members back to the Thabo Mofutsonyane region after a rally in Bethlehem on Saturday.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said four people died and 58 others were injured in the accident.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

He said the accident could have been caused by strong winds in the area.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Majang Skalkie confirmed that the bus was carrying ANCYL members. She could provide details of the fourth person killed in the crash.

I'd like to know what 'activities' these ANCYL members were always so committed to respond to ???

      Lacrimose - 2012-06-24 15:11

One thing's for sure - helping to deliver books to schools was not one of them.

      martin.britchford.5 - 2012-06-25 07:22

Couldnt have happened to a nicer bunch of people...."off to the big farm with a mine on it for mahala" in the sky...i wonder how long til they demand free sh1t from their god? And how long til they pull the race card? And cry victiiim for a heavenly struggle they missed by 30 years yet feel they need a gravy train for their "contribution" and spilt blood to yet again undermine the actual struggle their fathers and grandfathers pushed through. Rip ancyl...

      Vicker - 2012-06-26 09:19

This is truly terrible - when I read the article I burst into tears. Horrible, horibble news - I cannot believe the tragedy that only 4 died when there were 62 that could have been killed....

      curry.paradox - 2012-06-26 10:37

Reading these responses it is heartbreaking to see how much hate some people harbour. 4 South Africans have lost their lives. Have a little respect.

      Vicker - 2012-06-26 11:59

@curry - yeah like these numbskulls would show any respect for the 2000+ farmers (white) that have been killed so far... Fuggem...

      jaba.kov - 2012-07-09 06:31

With all due respect (and there is respect) I send my condolences to the families of the deceased - however, there was nothing special about their lives - in fact being part of the youth league today is a disgrace to South Africa, a disgrace to our freedom of speech, a disgrace to helping the poor and a disgrace to being a patriotic South African. Patriotic South Africans are those that go to work each day, pay taxes and make this country a better place. Fighting for freedom while we have had freedom for almost twenty years is a scandal and a waste of petrol for these buses. The ANCYL is nothing less then a group of thugs, which are hungry for power & money – it is a shame these young youth’s lives were not put into more constructive effort for South Africa.

      Eye's Cue - 2012-06-24 21:01

HEY EVERYONE!!! Do you remember how enraged you were when some people were nasty about the farmer who died of rabies and someone else was murdered? Just cool it now!!! We are all entitled to vote for whoever we like and to be really disappointed in the performance of the ruling party and its people BUT show a bit of moral decency here. Some people have been killed, there are mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, kids - all grieving tonight, give them so space...............ok?

      Arvin - 2012-06-24 22:37

Show your sympathy to the many farmers family that have been murdered by the very scum of the earth and most of them hateful ANC scumbags.

      denise.ryan.5203 - 2012-06-25 15:14

@ ALL ANC/ANCYL WANKERS - rejoice in your corrupt & inept government and the sh*thole that is the current South Africa. Like the ANC, our roads are disintegrating, 60% of national & provincial roads are in poor or very poor condition, compared to 22% in 1998. High time you hold the ANC responsible & accountable for the road deaths which costs the SA economy R58bn each year. With 15000 fatalities & several hundred thousand injuries every year on our roads, the three ANCYL members are just another statistic. Blue lights VIP have killed more. The major contributing factors of unnatural deaths in SA are thanks to the stupid practice of affirmative action and ANC corruption & stupidity. If your ANC want to appoint friends & family or idiots in positions of power & influence, by skin colour, who are unskilled, not qualified, have no ability, no work ethic, no training, no experience & no moral fibre, that's your problem, live with it. Expect more of your beloved comrades to die on the country's deteriorating roads because the ANC are never going to get serious about road maintenance or infrastructure. Anyone who believes otherwise or that the ANC is going to turn over a new forrest, is living in LaLa land. Dont expect the political rhetoric and self enrichment to stop either. There is no political will to rectify the situation (lip service does not count), a fish always rots from the head. The ANC is not here to serve the people, they are here to steal & accept bribes!

      heinrich.venter.9 - 2012-06-26 10:03

opinionhater, The ANCYL is a group of confused and vulnerable people ready to be brainwashed by their leaders, I don't think it's fair to blame the ANCYL as a whole, they are a product of a bad ruling party...you may remember that most white people were also brainwashed to confuse patriotism with racism...the ones that should be despised are all individuals in this country who think money will bring them happiness and step on each other to get it, the ones who think they should not be held accountable for their actions...we should remember that the promise of riches and fame blinds rational judgement, it's no excuse of course...but instead of hating until you're on the edge of killing, getting them to realize how blind they have been and welcoming them as fellow south africans is a long term solution that is much more progressive for the whole of society and well-being of our country...

      Michael - 2012-06-26 12:48

the "love" was dropped somewhere among all the corruption and flaming stupidity. The "love" was dropped when the systematic genocide of farmers began. Premeditated, with full knowledge of the government, and with NOTHING being done about it. The love was lost sometime soon after Shaik walked free, soon after the animals who run our country sold us out to the arms dealers, to the toll road operators, to China. We COULD have had a bit of extra love, but the Dalai Lama was barred - TWICE - from coming to SA. Zuma et al have stolen all the love. You want love? go get it from the ANC - they have everything - even the 7 jobs I cannot even apply for because I'm not black. And, lastly, there is no love, because it has been nationalised.

National tragedy? Please elaborate? Is the economy gonna collapse?

      Nicolaas - 2012-06-25 16:02

@Douglas, yes to them it is because it means less domrades to steal and pluner the country, less domrades to give tenders too and less domrades to incite violence and hate!

  • Douglas Theron - 2012-06-24 15:33

A national tragedy is that the government is defrauding itself of at least R30bn a year, 60 people are being murdered every day, 5 Yr old girls are being raped, girls re gang raped on a video and then they are released for a lack of evidence.. Poverty is increasing contrary to popular belief... That is a national tragedy not 3 people that have died.. It is sad i anyone dies but seriously this is not a national tragedy unless we live in different countries is the reporter really so bored to have to write stories like this please do some real journalism and stop wasting our time and MB with crap...

  • Gielman - 2012-06-24 15:40

So? Are they dead because of the road we white people brought to this barren land? or is it because of the taxi... Likely paid for with stolen money? \r\n\r\nNo? So, it can then only be the very rassist spell of weather we had then there... Yea... What else?

  • Khomotjo - 2012-06-24 15:41

So yal r making everything about racism?May their souls rest in peace

      Nicolaas - 2012-06-25 16:04

@DOMOTJIE, Maybe you now rest in peace after you come and display your non text book DOMPOPO education here on a platform for intellectual people!

  • melania.nel - 2012-06-24 15:43

May they RIP. Its not nice to celebrate anybody's death, and to those who want to justify it by saying 'they started it first', that makes you no better than them. if you want to claim you are better than them, why act like them. The comments just fuel their fire of hate and a lot of innocent people may get hurt.

      Iceberg - 2012-06-25 10:28

Lynn, with all the hate in your heart you will also be troubled for eternity. Seriously, try and pull yourself from that cesspool of hate you are swimming in. It's Monday, go for a walk, get off the internet and find something uplifting for your spirit. Imagine just for a moment, living in a shack in a squater camp somewhere. Then community leaders invite you to join them on a bus trip to a nearby town. To me that sounds like a chance I'll grab in order to escape my bleak circumstances - even if just for a day, NO MATTER WHAT THE CAUSE I have to support. Have compassion. Have respect. And be thankful.

      Nicolaas - 2012-06-25 16:07

@Iceberg, leaders inviting you to join them on a bus trip to do what? incite violence and hatred with a promise of free land, free house and non existant economic freedom. Well, you decide do you want to free or do you want to stay DOM!

      Iceberg - 2012-06-25 19:42

Nicolaas, that's not the point. You don't know for sure all of the people on that bus went to Bethlehem for the rally. If I lived in a shack in the Mofutsonyane region I will also grab this oportunity to visit Bethlehem for a change in scenery. Seriously, you can't make these assumptions as fact. According to News24 they went to a "rally" - a rally is a "Public meeting" or "Get together" an "assembly" or "convention". Nowhere does it say they were protesting or causing havock in Bethlehem. Now some of the passengers died on their way back. All I'm asking is that you have respect. Clearly you have never lost a child, brother or sister to death. If you had, you might just felt differently.

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-06-24 15:54

I am with You Mike. That bastard threatening woman as well.

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-06-24 23:30

Agreed, Chikunga. These comments are sick. Living on a Farm, I don't think these armchair racists have any idea what they are fuelling. As one silly little racist said: "Why on earth do they live on a farm if they know it is so dangerous?" We don't have to love the ANCYL, but they are still fellow SA's. However misguided, and misled. They are people, like us. Never dance on a grave - you will dance into yours.

  • sabelo.l.mthembu - 2012-06-24 16:12

Some of you with these negative comments are actually the reason for this racial tension in the country. You should die rather. The ANCYL is rather sh*ty but speaking ill of the dead like this. Shame on you. There really has to be more to life than the ANCYL

  • heinrich.venter.9 - 2012-06-24 16:34

One thing to remember people, two wrongs don't make a right, the ANC doesn't care what happens, they play their agenda very well, blaming everything on race, and the moment when you believe that, is the moment you lose all sense and rational thinking, whether you are black, white, green or purple...extremes are not the way to go people..and neither is vengeance...it amounts to absolutely nothing except more inhumanity, so look into you hearts and realize that none of you are animals and that you CAN be rational and mature...doing that would make you a better person...we all feel anger, hate and pain..but how we react on it is what defines us people and makes us different from animals...

      Douglas Theron - 2012-06-24 16:36

Very nice thank you for bringing us back to earth..

      tasmee.hylkema - 2012-06-25 21:21

I take exception to you depicting anger, hate, vengeance as animalistic. Animals are part of this planet as we are, they act on instinct, they kill only to feed, and the domesticated ones protect, guide and are our best friends. They are incapable of causing untold human suffering, we do it to them. So rightly so humans beings are the ones that harbour hate and bitterness to each other, not animals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      heinrich.venter.9 - 2012-06-26 09:45

Tasmee, I meant we have a choice, animals don't, as you said, they act according to their instinct and can't be blamed for it, humans on the other hand can be held accountable for what they do because the always have a choice...anger in an animal, whether it's out of defense or predatorial, its part of their nature. What makes us human is the ability to not act on anger or forgive...

  • desmond.drake.1 - 2012-06-24 16:41

Personally I am worried that Racism is still so rife in this country , the speed at which social cohesion is reversed by comments on this forum is alarming. Many of us thought the struggle against apartheid was over, that the country would move forward with all the politicians dealing with political matters in parliament (Black , White , Brown , Pink together ) . Carry on like this and you are going to see a two thirds majority for the ruling party , people were starting to forget and you just bring it all back.Sincere condolences go out to the grieving families irrespective of political affiliation.

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-06-25 16:43

This hatred has been carefully cultivated by the ANC and it's allies. We need to be strong and resist what they are doing to us, but I must give them credit, we are already a very poisoned bunch. I think I may be beyond repair already ... too many freinds raped, murdered, assaulted, too many things broken ... but I'm trying to be strong.

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-06-25 16:48

Its a true reflection of where we are in terms of mindset puse. This mindset has been taught by the ANC and its allies. Sorry, it worked. We're over the edge. Well done ANC - now we just need to see where we all end up - I'm not sure if it will be a good place...

  • Ryan - 2012-06-25 08:25

Back from where.....probably a farm attack! Good riddance!

Same here! Sad reality neh? If feel like we are one accident away from falling apart

      cindy.deutschmann.5 - 2012-06-25 14:32

@ Prince, if that had been 3 DA Youth members who had died how much space would News24 have devoted to the story? Probably nothing..... I think that the political affiliation of the deceased and victims is not news or newsworthy because of their politics but rather because the loss of any young lives is tragic and a waste... News24 are indulging in sensationalist rubbish and the Youth League are trying to make cheap political mileage out of the tragic deaths of 3 young South Africans Sies!

  • asivhanga - 2012-06-25 16:30

Mr editor why erase my comment? Are you one of the dromedaris?

  • james.m.wood.773 - 2012-06-25 17:40

how is this article important? do they intend on reporting about DA members dying as well?

  • silvia.vaneck2 - 2012-06-25 18:28

A tragedy to the nation is the fact that school books are being destroyed in Limpopo while kids are half way through their school year without any books to learn from. Three people dying is sad to those families affected but never ever a tragedy to the nation!!

  • Barefoot - 2012-06-25 18:46

Never voted for the ANC, but I'm seriously considering doing it after all these comments! shocked beyond measure.

  • dean.ramjoomia - 2012-06-25 21:31

The filth ,racism, prejudice, hate, anger and need for Revenge by death or murder express in the response to the death of 3 ANC youth league members who died in bus accident over the weekend is not shocking but for me pose a threat to our collective future. So to all my friends who is still in denial about a very serious potential violent outburst in our country I say wake up We must take our responses to what happen around us more serious. And for me this \War\ will be about (poverty, unemployment, land, and yes White on Black violence/racism). So \we\ need to measure ourselves in what we do or say. What is worst is there are No one in the current collective political leadership or leaders that might be able to stop such an explosion of \war\. Sorry but for me no leader Black or White commands such respect or control over the masses unlike a Madiba or Hani. God help us that this day or such a day never/not happen. I hope media 24 take notice of what are said in the name of freedom. We don't need court action to stop people its way beyond that. Tell me I'm a preacher of doom and I tell u about 76 and 1985.

  • Billy - 2012-06-26 02:47
