Cape Town - The ANC’s planned march in Cape Town’s CBD on Wednesday has received the go-ahead from the municipality, the party says.

More than 2 000 people are expected to take part. In an unusual development, Eyewitness News reported that Metrorail had offered its services free to ANC supporters wearing T-shirts bearing the party’s logo or carrying ANC posters.

Cosatu’s provincial leader Tony Ehrenreich seemed to confirm this when he tweeted on Tuesday evening that “Cosatu pays for transport from Metrorail like DA pays for their march transport [sic]”.

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille said it was a disgrace that the marchers were getting free transport.

The ANC is expected to hand over a memorandum to Zille and Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille.

A similar march in October last year turned violent when protesters started looting.
