Johannesburg - An Absa automatic teller machine was bombed at the Spruitview shopping centre near Katlehong early on Friday morning, Gauteng police said.
Captain Godfrey Maditsi said the bombing happened around 01:00.
The criminals managed to flee with an undisclosed amount of money.
A female police officer arrived at the scene while the men were still present.
It was unknown whether she was there to draw money or responding to a complaint - but the men opened fire on her.
The officer managed to take cover behind her marked vehicle but did sustain a minor injury.
The female officer was taken to hospital after other officers arrived at the scene.
It was believed the men opened fire on the officer because they saw her marked police vehicle.
The number of people involved in the bombing was unknown but links to another bombing on Friday in the nearby Alrode shopping centre were being investigated.
A case of contravening the explosives act was being investigated, said Maditsi.
