Pretoria - A woman accused of trying to kill her 2-year-old daughter is mentally immature, the Pretoria Magistrate's Court heard on Friday.

Linda Bruyns, 20, was naïve and had not mentally reached adulthood, her lawyer Pieter Coetzee read from a psychologist's report.

"She is not suicidal and will be safe with family. She does not grasp the gravity of the situation," Coetzee read.

Her previous emotional outbursts were attributed to threats she had received.

Magistrate Pierre Wessels had ordered that she undergo a psychological evaluation.

The court was adjourned for the prosecutor to obtain confirmation about the address of Bruyns's co-accused, her boyfriend Christo Conradie, 33.

The pair faces charges of assault and attempted murder.

During their bail application it emerged that Conradie had a case of common assault pending against him.

Conradie's lawyer SD Nel told the court his client could afford bail of R10 000.

He said that he did not know where his passport was and that he had no intention of leaving the country.

The toddler is recovering from her injuries at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital, in Pretoria.

The two were arrested after a doctor at the hospital contacted the police after treating the child. She had broken ribs, a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, a punctured pancreas and kidney, severe bruising all over her body, and suspected brain damage.
