Johannesburg - The man accused of attempting to kill his ex-girlfriend by throwing acid over her appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The matter was postponed to 11 March for a district surgeon to observe and conduct a report on Jan Pieterse's mental state, Magistrate A Roux told the court.

Pieterse's Legal Aid lawyer, AJ Greyling, would bring an application for an inquiry into whether Pieterse's mental capacity to stand trial would be ascertained.

The district surgeon's report would assist the inquiry on 11 March to determine whether Pieterse needed to be referred to Sterkfontein Mental hospital for 30 days.

The 29-year-old requested to have Legal Aid representation because he could no longer afford a private lawyer.

Dressed in an oversized jersey, Pieterse covered his face with a shirt when he entered the dock from the holding cells.

His father was the only family member present in court. The man left shortly after Greyling took over the matter.

Pieterse allegedly tried to kill his ex-girlfriend, Ines Antonio, 22, by throwing acid over her outside her house in Sydenham on 3 November.

She sustained burns to her face and chest.

Their daughter, who was with Antonio at the time, sustained minor burns to her arms.
