A YOUNG Greytown woman with a passion for horses has taken up the reins to become one of South Africa’s fastest rising polocrosse players.

Together with her spunky mare “Bonus”, Thembi Madonsela (21) will join team-mates in the development games scheduled for the opening of the Polocrosse World Championships in Shongweni on Thursday.

Madonsela was also chosen as one of three reserves for the South African team which will compete against seven countries, including Zambia, Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

Born and bred in Greytown, Madonsela grew up in the home of prominent horse enthusiast Caroline Minnaar, whose family nurtured her into the polocrosse player she is today.

“My mother worked for Caroline and was always terrified of the thought of me riding horses,” Madonsela said.

“My love for the sport stems from my love for animals and I feel like I can express myself best when I am on a horse.”

Madonsela, who works as a cashier in Greytown, has been riding horses since the age of 11.

She recalled her first major injury when she started learning how to ride.

“I was riding a horse without a saddle and there was a foal galloping on the other side of the fence. My horse bolted towards it and I tried to jump off, breaking my wrist and dislocating my arm in the process,” Madonsela said.

Since then, Madonsela has steadied her reins as part of the winning U19 South African championship team back in 2010 and will be competing as a “Number 3” defensive player this week.

She has been riding with Bonus since their victory in 2010 and has formed a close relationship with her 15-year-old horse.

“It is a privilege to represent my country. It has always been a dream for me. Bonus and I have a close connection. She is the only horse I ride,” Madonsela said
