Air show crash being investigated

2012-06-30 15:07

Johannesburg – The cause of a crash at the Klerksdorp Air Show that killed the L-39 Albatros’ pilot on Saturday morning is still unknown, said authorities.

"We are not certain what caused the crash. It's only been a couple of hours," said North West department of community safety spokesperson Simon Mope.

Mope said the cause of the crash would need to be investigated.

Investigators from the Civil Aviation Authority were at the scene to assess the situation.

Earlier the SA National Defence Force confirmed the Albatros was a civilian aircraft.

The pilot's identity could not be made public as his next of kin needed to be informed.

Mope said no one else was injured in the crash, but the road next to the airport leading to Stilfontein was still closed as debris littered the road.

Whatever the outcome of the investigation, this is a sad day for aviation. These pilots have amazing talent, they entertain thousands and people forget the skill needed for these wonderful "shows". To all the family condolences. I applaud each one of these pilots-take a bow!

Very sad indeed. Not to be confused with the two ex-SAAF P166 Piaggio Albatrosses that crashed into the mountains at Tzaneen last year.

WOW news24 reporters must be the most ignorant bunch when it comes to reporting on Aviation. I guess the only criteria that one needs to be a news reporter is to be able to write the ABC on a peace of paper

I don't think at this stage the technical aspects are a hi priority or of any concern .Condolences to all that feel loss and pain .

It is by no means a "CIVILIAN AIRCRAFT"; just go to images.google.com and look for yourselves. It is in fact a MILITARY training jet.

      koketso.senabe - 2012-06-30 17:09

It is a military-type aircraft owned by a civilian, so it is a civilian aircraft.

Wow an Albatros with a jet engine must be some sort of hy-BIRD
