Alberton murder trial postponed

2012-05-09 19:22
Johannesburg - The trial of a 75-year-old man accused of shooting dead his daughter and her husband was postponed by the Alberton Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Erwin Franz Poppinger briefly appeared in court and the matter was postponed until 17 May.

His lawyer Neels Kotze explained he was waiting for the Director of Public Prosecution's decision on how the matter would proceed.

Kotze said the defence was ready for the matter to be moved to the high court, and had set aside the period from July 23 to August 3 for this.

Poppinger was granted bail of R10 000 in September.

Kotze had argued his client should be granted bail because of his age and poor health.

Poppinger is accused of shooting dead his daughter Kim McGuirk, 34, and her husband Kevin, 54, in New Redruth, in August, reportedly following an argument over money.

Poppinger's daughter was found with a bullet wound in the head, and her husband with a gunshot in the back, in their bedroom.
