Alberton schoolbus catches fire

2012-04-19 10:32
Johannesburg - A bus, which was transporting 44 children, caught fire on the R59 freeway in Alberton on Thursday morning, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

"The engine compartment of the bus is in the rear... [and] the observant and alert bus driver, noticed smoke coming out from the engine, before he safely stopped the bus," Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said.

The 43-year-old bus driver and the children aged between 12 and 16 were not hurt. A 13-year-old girl was treated for smoke inhalation, said Mokheseng.

The bus was transporting the pupils from Randhart to Meyerton for a school outing.

Traffic on the R59 toward Vereeniging was affected.
