Modimolle - Limpopo police are not ruling out the possibility that alcohol may have played a part in the car accident involving Carl Pistorius, the older brother of murder accused Paralympian Oscar Pistorius.

Police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after Pistorius's car was involved in a head-on collision with another car on Friday evening on the N1 outside Modimolle.

"Both Pistorius and the other driver were seriously injured. Pistorius was taken to a Pretoria hospital while the other was taken to a local hospital. We have heard stories that alcohol may have contributed to the accident. If so, that is not ruled out and will be determined by our investigation,” said Limpopo police spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi on Thursday.

He said paramedics had to use the jaws-of-life to free Pistorius after the accident.

"Pistorius had two other people inside his car but they were not injured. According to the police report, the other driver was alone in the other car,” he said.

This is not the first time Carl Pistorius was involved in a serious car accident.

On May 2008, his bakkie collided with a motorbike of a woman who later died in hospital.

Pistorius was charged with culpable homicide, which was later changed to reckless and negligent driving.

In 27 May last year, the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court acquitted him of the charges because the State failed to prove a water-tight case against him.
