Durban - The bail hearing of a 32-year old man accused of shooting dead an African National Congress councillor was scheduled to be heard in the Durban Regional Court on Thursday.

Harris Mkhwanazi had been expected to apply for bail on Monday, but the matter was postponed to Thursday.

Mkhwanazi, who has two nicknames - Rhoo and Khumalo, is accused of firing several shots into a meeting being held at the Imbaliyethi High School in Chatsworth's Welbedacht area on 26 September.

He was apparently accompanied by another person, but no one else has been arrested.

ANC councillor Mthembeni Shezi, (also known as Msizeni Ximba), branch deputy chairperson Sbu Mpanza, and ward committee member Bulelani Mjoli, were wounded. Shezi died in hospital the next day.

The court was packed to capacity with ANC supporters wearing t-shirts emblazoned with a photograph of Shezi.

About 50 supporters were gathered outside the court building with placards indicating their opposition to the granting of any bail.
