Durban - A specialised police sex crimes task team has made a major breakthrough with the arrest of an alleged serial rapist that prowled Durban.

The 39-year-old man was arrested on Monday after a police swoop, and will be charged with six counts of rape.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that following a spate of attacks on women in Wentworth and Montclair since January, police had established the Brighton Beach Task Team to hunt the perpetrator.

“The suspect will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon on six counts of rape. The suspect’s modus operandi was to lure women by promising them employment,” Zwane added.

“He would then walk with these women into a secluded area and threaten them with a knife and rape them. He also carried a water bottle, and instructed the victims to wash themselves before raping them.”

Zwane called on any other potential victims to come forward.

“We appeal to other victims who may have been raped by the same suspect to come forward and submit their statements to the police.”

“Saps management welcomes the arrest as we are celebrating women’s month."
