Johannesburg - A Vietnamese man allegedly found with three rhino horns appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, the SA Revenue Service (Sars) said.
"The case was postponed to May 4 for bail application. He is remanded in custody," spokesperson Adrian Lackay said.
The 25-year-old, That Thai Dung, was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday when the horns were found in his luggage.
The man was leaving South Africa when his bags were searched by the Hawks, Airports Company SA officials and Sars.
"The man has travelled to South Africa before and he was being closely monitored when he was arrested," said Lackay.
Opposing bail, Activists for Animals Africa protested outside the court on Tuesday.
"We want a very strong message to be sent out by justice that you will remain in jail if found in any way to be involved in the illegal trade of rhino horn," spokesperson Miranda Jordan said in a statement.
Lackay said Dung faced various charges, including contravening the Customs and Excise Act.
