Johannesburg - The man alleged to have shot and wounded a Westbury toddler and injured another man appeared in the Newlands Magistrate's Court in Sophiatown on Tuesday.

Dressed in a blue sweater and a red t-shirt, the bald Lindray Khakhu appeared calm and composed as he stood before Magistrate Koos Pretorius.

Pretorius asked him whether he would like to apply for legal aid or use his own lawyer.

Khakhu opted to use his own lawyer, Rowen Meth, who struggled to find his way from the door through the packed court room.

Addressing Khakhu, Pretorius said the attempted murder charges against him were serious.

The man he allegedly shot had been discharged from hospital after being treated for a gunshot wound to the arm. The other victim, 3-year-old Luke Tibbetts, was in a critical condition in hospital.

The two were travelling in different cars when they were hit by stray bullets in a shooting incident on Saturday.

"It is unlikely you will be granted bail," Pretorius told Khakhu.

"And if he passes away you may be imprisoned for life," Pretorius said, referring to the wounded boy.

Prosecutor Vincent Mochabela told the court that Khakhu faced three other attempted murder charges which were pending before the High Court.

Pretorius postponed the case to 12 August.

Khakhu would remain in custody.

Khakhu was arrested at the weekend after people who witnessed the shooting identified him and reported the matter to the police.

No other arrests have been made and the cause of the shooting is unknown.
