Johannesburg - Two off-duty police officers were shot and
wounded in the early hours of Wednesday in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
Estcourt police station commander Colonel Oscar du Preez
was sleeping in his home when he was awoken by the sound of gunshots, police
spokesperson Jay Naicker said in a statement.
He contacted his neighbour and fellow police officer,
Captain Derrick Radebe, and they went to take a look.
"It is alleged that the two officers came under fire
from at least one suspect, and they returned fire," Naicker said.
The two officers were shot and wounded, one in the
shoulder, the other in the abdomen. Both were hospitalised and were in a stable
condition.
"It is not clear at this stage whether the suspect
was hit during the exchange of gunfire."
It is suspected that the man who shot at the two officers
broke into a house on nearby Welsch Road, stealing a laptop and fleeing on
foot.
The housebreaker matched the description of the man who
shot the two police officers.
