Alleged illegal miners lose cash to state

2012-05-24 19:08
Bloemfontein - Three alleged illegal miners from Lesotho have lost more than R100 000 after a court granted a forfeiture order to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Free State NPA spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said on Thursday the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein had granted the Asset Forfeiture Unit an order to attach R114 420 found in the men's possession.

Shuping said Johannes Chapatso, Mahase Khabele and Khauta Sellane allegedly made the money as illegal miners in Welkom and Bekkersdal.

They were arrested while trying to cross the Ladybrand-Maseru border into Lesotho, he said.

Police were searching them when they tried to run across the border into Lesotho, but they were arrested before doing so.

Shuping said it was later found that the men had just been released from prison.

He said the cash would be deposited into the criminal assets recovery account for use in the fight against crime.
