Alleged kidnapper 'faces the music'
Johannesburg - A student nurse who allegedly abducted a baby from a Port Elizabeth hospital has appeared in court, according to a report on Thursday.
Sibongile Mama, 28, turned herself in to police on Wednesday and appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court later that day, The Herald Online reported.
She was granted bail of R1 000 and was expected to appear before the court again on April 16.
"My client has faced the music and turned herself in," said Mama’s lawyer, Vuyo Ntswahlana.
"Obviously, the police were already looking for her, but she’s being co-operative."
The abduction happened at the Dora Nginza Hospital a week ago and police were able to trace the 3-day-old's whereabouts to the house of the woman's aunt in New Brighton over the weekend. The aunt was initially arrested but later released.
Police said DNA tests were being conducted on the mother of the child, Dianne Wabanie, and Mama to determine if the baby could possibly belong to someone else.
Police were however convinced that it was Wabanie's child.
