Queenstown - An awaiting-trial prisoner was found dead in a cell at the Tsomo police station on Thursday morning, police said.
Captain Gcinikaya Taleni said police found 36-year-old Simphiwe Magoloza hanging from the roof of his cell when they did their rounds around 5.30am.
"The prisoner tore the blanket to hang himself. He was alone in the cell," Taleni said.
Magoloza was arrested with another man earlier this week for allegedly raping a 65-year-old woman and her 12-year-old granddaughter.
The two men allegedly forced their way into the women's room and demanded money. She gave them R100 after which the men repeatedly raped her and the girl.
Magoloza's co-suspect, 22-year-old Mlungiseleli Sihamba appeared before the Tsomo magistrate's Court on Thursday on two counts of rape, assault, robbery and malicious damage to property. His case was postponed to October 21 for further investigation.
