Durban - An alleged rapist shot the complainant dead at Mariannhill, police said on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Thulani Mkhize said a 20-year old student, who was shot on Tuesday night, had laid a charge of rape against the man at the Mariannhill police station last week.
On Tuesday she took officers, who were investigating the case, to where the man lived in the Tshelimnyama area in Durban's outlying Mariannhill suburb.

A Mariannhill policeman who spoke on condition of anonymity said: "Everybody (at the police station) is upset.
"We wish we could have done more for her."
Residents reported a large police presence in the area on Wednesday morning.
The identity of the woman has not been released by police.
Mkhize said the man was known to the police and it is believe that he used an unlicensed firearm.
