Johannesburg - King Thandizulu Sigcau, of the AmaMpondo ase Qaukeni, in the Eastern Cape, has died after a sudden illness, the department of traditional affairs said on Tuesday.

Sigcau died in the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, in Mthatha, on Monday night, the department's director general Prof MC Nwaila said in a statement.

"We take this opportunity to thank him for the selfless service he has rendered to the country for over the last 40 years as a reigning King of the AmaMpondo," he said.

He said Traditional Affairs Minister Richard Baloyi extended his "deepest sympathy and regret".

Funeral and burial preparations were underway, and details would be released once the arrangements were finalised.
