Pretoria - The driver of an ambulance, a medical assistant, two patients and a two-year-old girl were injured when the vehicle rolled while on its way to 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria on Tuesday, police said.
The military ambulance was ferrying two female patients to the hospital from Nelspruit, said police spokesperson Captain Piletji Sebola.
One of the women was eight months pregnant. Her two-year-old daughter was also on board.
As it was travelling on the N4 highway between Donkerhoek and Mooiplaas, east of Pretoria, the left rear wheel of the ambulance burst and it rolled, Sebola said. It landed on the island in the middle of the freeway.
The driver was critically injured and taken by helicopter to the same hospital he had been driving to. The other four suffered less serious injuries and were brought to the hospital by another ambulance.
The first ambulance was completely wrecked, Sebola said.
