Johannesburg - A man was arrested for allegedly damaging a car with a knobkerrie on Saturday morning, North West police said.

The 26-year-old protester would appear in the Bafokeng Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of malicious damage to property, police spokesperson Thulane Ngubane said.

"About 20 Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union [Amcu] members blocked roads leading to Impala Mineral Process Plant with the intention of preventing other employees from going to work," Ngubane said.

A car belonging to an employee at the Impala Mineral Process Plant was damaged with a knobkerrie by one of the protesters.

The man, an Amcu shopsteward, was on bail on a separate case of attempted murder, he said.

The strike in the North West platinum belt was in its second week.

Workers were demanding R12 500 monthly salary.

North West Premier Thandi Modise on Saturday, expressed concern about the violence incidents associated with Amcu members.

"We wish to express our disappointment that acts of violence have emerged amid allegations of intimidation of non-striking workers, barricading of some routes and pelting of motorists with stones.

"We wish to appeal to striking Amcu members to respect the rights of other citizens, their freedom of movement and their properties," Modise said in a statement.
