Cape Town - Family members and friends have marked the 20th anniversary of the death of American student Amy Biehl in Cape Town.

The Amy Biehl Foundation organised a programme on Sunday that included a church service in Gugulethu and the laying of flowers and tributes at the site where she was murdered.

A memorial was unveiled at the site in 2010.

The Orange County Register reported that about 40 friends and community members attended the informal commemoration on Sunday. Biehl's mother, Linda, was present, as were Easy Nofemela and Ntobeko Peni – two of the four men found guilty of killing Biehl in 1993, and who now work for the Amy Biehl Foundation.

The foundation was established in 1997 and provides after-school programmes in Gugulethu and surrounding communities, which serve more than 2 000 children.

Linda Biehl spoke at the event about reconciliation and forgiveness, saying "this is not exactly about one person forgiving the other… this is about reconciliation, and it takes more than one person to reconcile", the Orange County Register reported.

Meanwhile, the Amy Biehl Foundation is preparing to celebrate its annual Youth Spirit Award and Memorial lecture at the University of the Western Cape on Tuesday, to honour young people who are making a difference in their communities. Minister in the Presidency Trevor Manuel will be the keynote speaker.
