Johannesburg - The fighting spirit of Anene Booysen's mother will not be forgotten, Human Settlements Minister Connie September said on Saturday.

"I witnessed first-hand [Corlia Olivier's] deteriorating condition but she put up a brave fight till her last day," September said in a statement.

Olivier, the mother of Western Cape rape and murder victim Anene Booysen, died from cervical cancer in Bredasdorp earlier this week.

She was diagnosed with the disease in December.

September sent her condolences to the family.

"I personally had the privilege of meeting Olivier when I visited the family last month and laid a wreath on Anene's grave," said the minister.

Booysen was raped and disembowelled, and died in Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, on February 2 last year.

Her killer Johannes Kana was given two life sentences for crimes against the teenager. His attempt to apply for leave to appeal against his conviction was denied by the Western Cape High Court.
