Angler drowns after being swept from rocks

Johannesburg - An angler has drowned after being swept off the rocks at Voelklip, near George on Sunday, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

"One adult male, from Johannesburg...had been swept off rocks by a wave while angling around 11:20," said Wilderness's NSRI station commander Hennie Niehaus.

Rescue workers swam out to the man and attempted to resuscitate him after he was brought back to shore.

He was taken to hospital where resuscitation efforts continued however the man was declared dead shortly afterwards.

His sister arrived later at the scene and was being provided with trauma counselling.

    There is (usually) a larger wave every 11th. My son and I nearly suffered the same fate in PE some years ago on the first day of the holiday. Luckily we were on top of the rocks and were swept backwards toward the beach, each with mutiple injuries. I commiserate and think of the friends and relatives left behind. RIP
