Angler feared drowned

2011-09-11 14:33

Cape Town - A 51-year-old Cape Town man who was swept into the sea while fishing is presumed to have drowned, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

The man was fishing with two others, thought to be his nephews, when a wave swept him off the rocks at Monwabisi, near Strandfontein on the False Bay coast, said Clint Abrahams, NSRI Strandfontein deputy station commander.

The NSRI was alerted at 03:39 and launched sea rescue craft as well as shore patrols. A helicopter joined the search at first light.

"No sign of the missing angler has been found and he is presumed to have drowned," Abrahams said.

He said the man may have been caught in rip currents and swept out to sea. A sea and shore search is continuing.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
