Angola gets Malaria relief

Washington - More than half a million residents of Angola will be the first beneficiaries of a US initiative to curb malaria in three African nations, the White House announced on Thursday.

The Angolans' homes will receive indoor spraying. At least 130 000 children and pregnant women in Tanzania will be protected when bednets are distributed later this month.

Uganda is the third country that is targeted in a five-year, $1.2bn effort aimed at reducing malaria deaths by 50% in each of the three nations.

The United States and the three African governments recently signed a declaration detailing the malaria-fighting programme.
