Johannesburg - Angry residents have burned down a house in Cookhouse, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

The house was destroyed by the fire on Sunday, Warrant Officer Elize van Eck said.

"At this stage I cannot say what the name of the woman who owns the house is. I can't confirm or deny if she is a ward councillor or not," Van Eck said.

A crowd gathered at the house and when police tried to disperse them they were pelted with stones.

On 18 October, several protests were reported in Cookhouse. Residents burnt tyres and blocked roads to express their dissatisfaction with the rate of housing delivery and other services.

On 17 October, protesters set a municipal building alight. They set fire to a tractor tyre under a railway bridge on the R63, which disrupted traffic, and stoned a police car.
