Tzaneen - A mother and her two children, aged three and five, were left with just the clothes on their backs this week when her boyfriend set their shack on fire when she refused to sleep with him without a condom.
Caroline Sebetha, 23, of Mbambamencisi informal settlement near Tzaneen in Limpopo, said the family was sleeping in their one-roomed shack at about 04:00 on Tuesday morning when her boyfriend wanted to have sex.
"When I told him to wear a condom because I was not using any contraceptive, he became angry and started assaulting me in front of the kids," she said.
She said she managed to run away with the children and sought refuge at a friend's house.
She said she remained there the whole day and received news at about 17:00 that her shack was on fire.
"When I ran back home, I found that the shack had been reduced to ashes and my boyfriend was nowhere to be seen," she said.
Sebetha was treated at Letaba Hospital for bruises she sustained to her lips and back.
Ritavi police inspector Mavis Shilubane confirmed that a case of arson and assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm has been opened.
No one has been arrested and Sebetha's boyfriend is on the run.
