Angry mob beats shoplifter to death

2012-06-07 16:49

Polokwane - A suspected shoplifter was beaten to death in Polokwane after he allegedly stole sweets from a shop, Limpopo police said on Thursday.

Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the man was caught by a mob as he tried to flee the shop.

"It is believed the mob used different objects to beat the man to death."

Ngoepe said the man was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

“We are very worried about the trend of people resorting to taking [the] law into their [own] hands."

Ngoepe warned that those involved would be prosecuted.

Police were investigating a murder case.

but do we have to kill someone for stealing sweets?...people you are killing the wrong people...while ATM bombers...Vampires walking in the streets...Rapists nursing kids...Corrupt officials robbing you everyday...Yet we kill the very least harmful.

      Andrew - 2012-06-07 17:38

@Douglas...please don't insult animals. My dog is offended!!! The right words are Barbaric, uncivilized, inhumane etc...!!!

      eserfontein - 2012-06-07 18:04

this is shocking but I'm not surprised.

      Fussed - 2012-06-07 18:07

The law does nothing and the public are gatvol with crime gov not interested GOOD FOR THEM

      Warwick - 2012-06-08 08:49

Hey Dougie, my dogs would never behave like this.

  • Craig - 2012-06-07 17:00

Much better then letting the courts do it at our cost !

      arne.verhoef - 2012-06-07 18:43

Would you like to be beaten to death without a fair trail? Over a coupla bucks of sweets?

  • Henk - 2012-06-07 17:03

      Martin - 2012-06-08 07:34

  • spartanx93 - 2012-06-07 17:06

its a shame they do not beat their corrupt politicians to death for stealing money!

      Henk - 2012-06-07 17:20

Jip very Sad, But the Cadres have bee given a mandate from the people to plunder and steal....Big difference!

      Martin - 2012-06-08 07:38

thats the purpose for the govs vip security, its a bit excessive for upstanding political leaders, who they scared of? or is it just trying to be gangster... noone trusts the police, i wont call them for assistance ever, nothing says promises delivered like a blue light convoy bulldozing other road users, while escaping "life threatening situations or trying to make cake on time"

  • ro.jhb.1 - 2012-06-07 17:06

Sadly this is going to be a more common occurrence. People have lost faith in the government and I hate to say rightly so. The equally sad issue is that innocent people are going to be caught up in the ‘mob justice’. The ANC is too concerned with Zuma and his opposition and how much they can steal than in the people. The sooner they realise this the better.

  • morati.maropola - 2012-06-07 17:25

Even though when steaing in the store there is no penalty but that does not promote mob justice.

  • Sharon - 2012-06-07 17:26

people have no faith in the police so they resort to taking the law into their own hands, the govt must sort out law enforcement asap or things will get worse.

  • bernadette.mundy - 2012-06-07 17:35

Barbaric. Absolutely disgusting. Screw Zombie Apocolypse, these citizens of SA are gonna destroy one another first! Killing someone over sweets just coz u wanna feel some sort of justice? If we all had our way, society would crumble. Wish these morons would realise that. There are other ways to curb crime. You can toy toy over paintings, murder over sweeties but not rape or corruption? Get priorities straight, SA. Not even in the harshest of countries does stealing a sweet warrant a violent death. Perhaps the amputation of a hand, but not death.

I dont think there animals at all @Douglas Theron, whites and people in general need to undertsnad this people are poor there only trying to live there lives and make an honest living. I admit there are faults in the black community and thats from people not raising thier children properly, some people actually think they have the right over other peoples property and lives in this country I love my people I love black people but there are blacks in this country that think thier entitled to others properties and wealth, Im a single mother I pay my bills I pay for sons life and living expenses his father left me but you would never say he has all that he needs, I pay for schools fees, Unecessary Nike soccer boots, games,TV games whatver else a small child wants and I do that the hard way because having him was my doing, and I dont do crime why sould some tsotsi take what belongs to us?! why do we derserve it. I was mugged once by four black men, do you know what annoys me about that fact that there black? the fact that my sons father his black and he didnt gove two hoost of what happened to us, we survived my son his now 11 this year sn four black men tried to take my life and what belonged to me, I earned that the hard way, I did nails,make-up started a busisness worked really hard to give him something, and four of my own people tried to take it away even his mother who waas the only person who gave it to him.

      Bokfan - 2012-06-07 18:09

Ma'am my hat is off to you for your commitment, but let me say this with all respect;attending to your child's material wants is not the same as attending to his emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs. It is those very wants that create the hellish society we live in. Nikes, playstations, Beemers and JohhnyBlue do not a decent citizen make.

      Leon - 2012-06-07 18:16

I think were generalizing to much. Each case needs to be judged on its own merits. I once saw a very old woman in a police station locked up behind bars for shoplifting R26 worth of food for her grandchildren. Cop told me not to feel to sorry for her because she is probably lying. It broke my hart. We don't know why he did it and death is NOT the correct punishment.

      Isabel - 2012-06-07 23:04

I take my hat off to you. We have good and Bad in Whites , Blacks and what ever colour they ar God Bless you and your son. You are a great lady and God bless you and your son.Im on Facebook and would love to be your friend. Look for me. Isabel Ashe.

      tebogo.maja.77 - 2012-06-07 23:49

@ Leon, Death is not always the correct punishment, but for those that are beyond rehabilitation, that are repeat murderers, repeat rapists, repeat home-invaders, threatening the safety of hard-working tax payers. For those death is a solution.

      tebogo.maja.77 - 2012-06-07 23:54

The old lady only stole R26.00 rand of food for her grand kids and she is locked up in jail, while real criminals are out there. Our police and justice system is pathetic, could'nt they have released the woman and followed up to see what could be done for the grand kids at least?. Police cells are filled with people who did light crimes, yet the scourge of the underworld/hell are living free and in-cases are buddies with the cop's and politicians.

      Warwick - 2012-06-08 08:53

Well done to you. Do you know that the leading cause of death amongst black males in the USA are other balck males. Why? I reckon this must be almost true here in SA as well.

  • Tony Lapson - 2012-06-07 17:58

When real, murderous criminals are too violent and scary to target, go for the weak thief..... Then feel satisfied with your "good" deed.

      nathi.mnisi.7 - 2012-06-07 18:33

      My sentiments exactly.

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-06-07 18:28

Well said Leon,i belonged to a charity organisation where we uplifted people with genuine needs on a merit system, yes plenty took chances on a want basis, not a need basis.

  • nathi.mnisi.7 - 2012-06-07 18:31

Ok rough him up a bit, a few warm klaps even but My God is a human life really worth a few sweets? Yet if it were a murder or a rapist they wont touch him through fear? Even worse if it were a ganster the guy would be imbraced in most societies. Degenerating society we live in....Heaven help us all.

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-06-07 18:31

marum from the horses mouth hey you okes are already killing for whatever already the world is watching you.

  • Zenzile Tshanda - 2012-06-07 18:35

  • jock.vanwyk1 - 2012-06-07 18:37

is this South Africa's version of trick or treat?

  • michael.i.wright - 2012-06-07 18:37

Rob an entire country, you're a hero. Rob a sweet shop and get killed.

  • arne.verhoef - 2012-06-07 18:42

  • Bra Tebzaah Sibilanga - 2012-06-07 19:18

  • charmaine.paterson1 - 2012-06-07 20:10

If I catch the thieves that stole my brand new phone last week I will torture them slowly, it'll take them a week to die.

  • logen.naidoo - 2012-06-07 20:12

\Taking the law into their ow hands\ the justice system is failing us because the biggest criminals are operating at top level and cannot be concerned about the people that really need their help. Look at videos published on police brutallity and the state expects people to the justice system considering our top police members are crooked.

  • Konanani - 2012-06-07 20:42

I was reading about a girl who got attacked over a soap and now this one died over stumbo, wow

    Lets blame our justice system...

  • tebogo.maja.77 - 2012-06-07 22:13

“We are very worried about the trend of people resorting to taking [the] law into their [own] hands" If the cops were doing their job, none of this would have happened. The truth is people are sick and tired. Thiefs, murderers and criminals of all types are enjoying the reign of this government. There is no tough action taken against them. Its unfortunate but the trend will be an increasing one for a long time to come, so long as the police and the justice system fail the people.

      tebogo.maja.77 - 2012-06-07 23:40

Unfortunately the ones with the smallest crimes will be the ones to get hurt.

  • TawwaTienie - 2012-06-07 22:34

People are GATVOL for Crime in the country. Criminals are also taking other lifes and law into their own hands. How many criminals are in the force.

  • johan.vandermerwe.33 - 2012-06-07 23:52

Give the mob the murderers and rapist and child molesters, then I will agree to mob justice, but sweets stealers...no no!!

  • Heino Meyer - 2012-06-08 05:30

Steel is steel, rape is rape. If your a criminal you dont belong. Unfortunately south africa it is te norm. It comes from the beggar who lives on the street to the high ranking police officers and government officials.

  • jock.vanwyk1 - 2012-09-16 21:27

blame the british, blame verwoerd, blame apartheid, blame the whites, blame the police, blame poverty, just dont blame our sick society

  • Floris du Preez - 2013-06-26 07:26

good. one less to worry about. just wish they could find all the corrupt officials as well. target the rapists and murderers too while your at it. cause obviously our police isn't up for the challenge. the police and the ruling party should wake up. south africa is at war. and its not a racial war its the criminals vs everyone else and so far the criminals are ahead.
