Angry mob beats teen to death

Nelspruit - An angry mob killed a teenager and seriously injured his friend after they broke into a house and stole items in Sun City village near KwaMhlanga on Thursday, Mpumalanga police said.

Sergeant Nonhlanhla Kgosana said a man, 31, walked his girlfriend out of his home in section B at about 07:00.

Two teenagers apparently saw the couple leave and entered the property, said Kgosana.

The youths, aged 18 and 19, broke open the door of the sitting room and took a DVD player, a TV set and several other electrical appliances.

"When the man came back shortly (after), he found them preparing to leave the house and blew the whistle," said Kgosana.

Community members came to the man's assistance and interrogated the pair.

Kgosana said the teenagers confessed to the crowd that they had also recently broken into other homes in the same neighbourhood and stolen various items.

"They also led the mob to the home of one of them, where several DVD players, TV sets and more electrical gadgets were found with an estimated value of about R20 000," she said.

"The community members got more furious and beat them with their fists, stones and anything that they could lay their hands on."

"They were rushed to KwaMhlanga Hospital in a serious condition, where the older one was certified dead on arrival," said Kgosana.

A case of murder was opened and the injured teenager was expected to face a charge of house breaking in the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court.

Gail says... In many respects the media have become the police in the last 20 years of freedom. During the apartheid years they were muzzled by the State in much the same way that the ANC is attempting to do now. The Editor of Daily Despatch in East London had to flee for his life for defying them - Donald Woods. Do we really want to return to that time? If sources don't come forward many people would get away with what the Eugene De Kocks did during that time and worse. That is not in the public interest of anyone regardless of who the finger is pointing at. Look how many powerful people have been unmasked for the thieves and crooks they are. They have the money to defend themselves and yet use taxpayers money like Selebi has and still owes the State. (By the way how is Jackie and where is he?) Sources must have the security of knowing that they will be protected by law and should the newspaper be sued for libel by any powerful person then the Media might go back to the source again should their report be placed under threat. I realise that occasionally someone cries rape against a particular person and where the victim is an unreliable witness and the case is thrown out for that reason, the mud tends to stick to the rapist. The alleged rapist then has the right to sue the victim for slander and damages. One seldom hears of that happening. I wonder why. This is why media are so careful around rape cases frequently avoiding use of any names. Read the article...
