Another deal in Henning case

2012-06-06 16:01
Pretoria - One of the five men arrested for the murder of Chanelle Henning is expected to finalise a plea and sentence deal with the State when he appears in court next month, the Pretoria News reported on Wednesday.

Preshan Singh appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday where his matter was postponed to July 17.

During Tuesday’s brief appearance, the prosecutor Andrea Johnson told the court that the plea bargain negotiations had not been concluded.

The Pretoria News said Singh was understood to be negotiating an agreement that would see him getting off with a suspended sentence and community service for his role in the murder of the young mother.

The gun

Singh is out of custody on R5 000 bail which was granted on November 30 in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

During his bail application, Singh told the court that he supplied the firearm which was used to kill Henning. He however contended that he did not know what the gun would be used for.

In December two men pleaded guilty to the murder charges and were sentenced to 18 years each for their roles in the drive-by shooting of the assistant teacher.

Former police detective Gerhardus du Plessis and Willem Martinus Pieterse were sentenced following a plea bargain negotiation with the State.

More accused

In February the former cop received another 15 year sentence in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, for an unrelated corruption charge.

The sentences run concurrently.

The trial of two other men accused of killing Henning was moved from the magistrate’s court to the high court in Pretoria.

The case against former Nigerian Olympic athlete Ambrose Monye and co-accused Andre Gouws will be heard in the superior court from November 19 until 30.

Monye’s bail application will be heard in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on June 15. Gouws was denied bail in March.
