Durban - A man was gunned down at the Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi on Tuesday night, his death adding to the mounting toll at the notorious housing complex.

The hostel has played host to pitched battles between rival groups of gunmen, with allegations of extortion and police corruption rife.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the bullet-riddled body of a 26-year-old man was discovered in a parking area at around 21:00.

"The motive for the killing is unknown. No arrests have been made," Zwane said.

Community activist Vanessa Burger said a culture of violence continued to pervade the hostel.

"I don’t know all the details and I haven't managed to get out there yet. From what I have heard it would appear that there were some hit men dropped off at Block R with the intention of attacking the residents there and in the process, one man was killed.

“The situation has not changed. There continues to be violent and illegal evictions and people are still being targeted who don't contribute protection money. These thugs demand money that people don't have just to keep their rooms," Burger said.

"The provincial police task team established to take over the investigation of some of the Glebelands cases have done some excellent work over the last couple of months. This is not a police issue," she added.
