Durban - The ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal has nominated North West chairperson Collen Maine as presidential candidate.

The decision was taken at the provincial general council held at the weekend.

"The PGC took into account the critical tasks facing the ANCYL in general as we emerge from the culture that has seen the youth league assuming a position that defined it outside the ANC," it said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The PGC acknowledged that the period since the dissolution of the national executive committee resulted in the crippling of the youth agenda both within and outside the ANC."

The ANCYL will hold its national congress this weekend.

The leadership structures of the ANCYL were disbanded by the ANC in 2013.

The race to become the league's president has been marred by claims of irregular auditing processes and allegations of interference from top structures within the ruling party.

An ANC official has been accused of working hand-in-hand with a so-called "premier league" on the auditing of branches to ensure the delegates who get selected to attend the elective conference will vote for the its preferred candidates.

The "premier league" is said to include North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo, Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza and Free State Premier Ace Magashule.

It is understood it wants Maine to lead the league. This is linked to 2017 when the ANC elects a successor to President Jacob Zuma.

The ANCYL in KwaZulu-Natal said the league was determined to rekindle the confidence of young people at the congress.

Other people nominated for leadership positions by the province were:

- Desmond Moela for deputy president;

- Njabulo “Mzimela” Nzuza, secretary general;

- Thandi Moraka, deputy secretary general and;

- Reggie Nkabinde, treasurer general.

"We remain confident that the leadership collective to be led by these officials will be equal to the task of leading the programme that will emerge from the national congress and further reposition the ANCYL to be the only credible voice for young people in the country , and indeed their natural home," it said.

KwaZulu-Natal will have the largest delegation at the congress, made up of 820 voting delegates.

The ANCYL in the North West also resolved at the weekend to nominate Maine for the position of president.
