Armed gang still on the run
Johannesburg - A gang of four men who fled the scene of an armed robbery at Fairland Spar were still on the run, Johannesburg police said on Friday.
"We are still searching for the men...and are continuing investigations," Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.
The men were part of a gang of six who split up on Thursday afternoon after allegedly robbing the supermarket of money and customers' valuables.
Four of the men who sped away in a Toyota minibus had not been found.
The remaining two were arrested late on Thursday afternoon in a blue Ford Bantam bakkie that had been stolen in Wierdabrug, south-west of Pretoria.
The gang had entered the Spar after 16:00 on Thursday and held customers and staff at gunpoint, Dlamini said.
They apparently removed money from the tills and robbed customers of valuables before fleeing.
As they left the store, they fired several shots and hit a security guard in the chest and left arm, leaving him critically injured.
ER24 paramedic Vanessa Jackson said another man, in his thirties, was shot in the shoulder.
She said an employee of a nearby shop, also in his thirties, was visiting the supermarket when he was assaulted and knocked over the head with a blunt object, although police could not confirm this.
Police recovered an abandoned white Ford Bantam bakkie on the scene as well as the vehicle of a security guard that had been hijacked by the gang and later abandoned.
They also recovered an undisclosed amount of money found on the two men and two cellphones from the security vehicle.
