Johannesburg - Three armed robbers were shot dead on Monday and another two were severely wounded in Soweto, police said.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini said the gang had robbed a Pick 'n Pay supermarket in Honeydew at 08:00.
"There were between six to eight suspects who took a substantial amount from the supermarket, but no one was injured in the robbery," he said.
The robbers escaped in two getaway vehicles.
Police sent out the particulars of the vehicles on their radio and one of the cars was spotted in Nasrec by Johannesburg Crime Prevention officers.
"Police gave chase and while in pursuit, the robbers opened fire on the police in the Diepkloof, Soweto area".
"The officers returned fire and three robbers were fatally wounded and another two were seriously injured," Dlamini said.
The scene was cordoned off and on inspection, police found three pistols and recovered the stolen money.
The other suspects in the second getaway car are being sought by police.
