Johannesburg - A pensioner was wounded when five men robbed a jewellery shop in the Menlyn Park mall in Pretoria on Tuesday morning, Gauteng police said.
"At approximately 10:00, five unknown, armed males entered the NWJ jewellery store at entrance seven of the Menlyn Park Shopping Centre," Warrant Officer Annabelle Middleton said.
They told staff to lie down and helped themselves to the jewellery.
While they were fleeing, they fired a single shot at an elderly man who was getting a shopping trolley. The bullet grazed his head.
After being treated by paramedics on the scene his relatives took him to his doctor. Nobody else was hurt.
"The shop attendants are very traumatised and counselling has been arranged," said Middleton.
Police believe three accomplices were waiting outside the mall in two cars for the robbers.
The centre was reviewing CCTV footage to confirm this.
