Arms cache haul 'best Christmas present'

2011-11-24 16:27

Johannesburg - A man has been arrested after an arms cache was found at a house in Steynsburg in the Eastern Cape, police said on Thursday.

Four rifles, three revolvers and more than 500 rounds of ammunition were seized on Wednesday, said Lieutenant Colonel Sibongile Soci.

"Forensics [experts] and investigators were called in to determine the source of the artillery (sic) which may possibly lead to other arms caches," said Soci.

A 43-year-old man was arrested on scene. Details of his involvement were still unclear.

The man would appear in the Steynsburg Magistrate's Court soon.

"This is the best Christmas present I could have asked for," said Eastern Cape provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Celiwe Cele.

"Every firearm recovered and every suspect arrested is one more step towards ensuring that people in South Africa are and feel safe."

Four rifles, three revolvers and more than 500 rounds of ammunition, Is that a arms cache???? seems a little small dont it? When i was in the army we found tonnes of weapons, thats a arms cache, This guy had a collection.

      Robert - 2011-11-24 21:27

We nearly faced a Coup d'etat. One more gun and the government would have toppled. Whow well done guys you safed us from a grissly ending.

  • Hugh - 2011-11-24 16:44

Knowing our cops, the rifles and hand guns are licenced to the guy they arrested. If that's an arsenal then my (@(%$ a kipper.

  • Rijger - 2011-11-24 16:45

Jeepers, what a huge arms cache! This guy should be locked away for life, threatening the livilyhood of all our peace loving peoples. I mean, with four rifles, three revolvers and 500 rounds of ammunition he could have supplied Shabaab for a whole year!!! Now how about some real police work Mr Provincial Police Commissioner, why don't you show us how many rapists, robbers and murderers you have managed to arrest and succesfully prosecuted to give us a Christmas present for a change instead of showboating over crap?

  • Nosiphom - 2011-11-24 16:46

Is it a coincidence that the Provincial Commissioner is a Cele ?

  • Stinkhout - 2011-11-24 16:47

The stats suggest the Police loose 8 guns per day so this find will be back in circulation tomorrow.

  • Nevil - 2011-11-24 16:50

Well you know your country is in good hands with the caliber of ole Lt. Col. Sibongile Soci when he reckons four rifles and three revolvers are deemed artillery!

  • Andre - 2011-11-24 17:11

Oh my goodness, what a haul!!

  • Terence - 2011-11-24 17:15

The Police obviously don`t have much to do in Steynsburg! The poor bugger has probably, like me, been waiting for more than 2 years for them to sort out the licences.

  • Allen - 2011-11-24 17:19

What was he going to do with this "arms cache"? Start a revolution? Storm the Union Buildings? Insurrection and usurping of the government's power? As Rijger says, their showboating knows no bounds!Leave the police work to the real police and get yourself a job. (A carguard might just be your Maslow's level of incompetence) Lt General "jobs for pals" Cele - what a joke!

      Rijger - 2011-11-24 17:55

Allen, did Maslow have a level of competence that low? Not so sure about it myself.

  • Jerhone - 2011-11-24 17:24

it's the best christmas present because you lot will probabily sell it for christmas money, "every firearm discovered ensures safety" what about the thousands that your foolishmen have lost and stolen you retard

  • Leon - 2011-11-24 17:24

What about all the AK's and ex military semi-auto's floating around. They make me much more nervous!

  • Robert - 2011-11-24 17:25

Whow - Right now out there in the TAXIS - youd fins 10000 times more. This is not an amrms cache. This is a joke. Please crack us better news. This reaches the news paper - anyway lets be motivated - Please go for BIGGER arms cache's. Let keep an eye on this. Hope next time there is one more rifle and one more hand gun and a 1000 rounds, go inspectors - do it and recieve R 1.00 bonus in doing so and so that you can buy 1 chappie for Christmas. Motivate them and we are stangly behind you. How many guns where stolen from the Police last year?????? way more than this.

Eastern Cape provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Celiwe Cele: Good to hear you seemingly talking from the heart, Sir, but you should know that this find is like a few gnats amongst a heard of elephants? Are your troops really so unsuccessful?

  • Sharon - 2011-11-24 18:25

I would feel safer but the thought that crosses my mind is the 20429 police guns "lost" since 2004. That makes this story look silly by comparison. Maybe the cops should sweep in front of their doors first!

  • Adrian - 2011-11-24 18:36

Soci and Cele, do you guys know what an arms cache is? Artillery? My Christmas present would be the 7 ATM bombers, their R5's and their bullet proof vests, who visited our village at 3pm the other night. They are suspected to be policemen. Add that to the other military and police weapons still in MK and other criminal hands and we can start talking about caches. "Artillery"...sorry, I give up. Your own members are killing and robbing with state weapons while you incarcerate peaceful collectors.

  • Robert - 2011-11-24 21:36

I think they confused - Cash and Cache is too close. Maybe it was a large sum of cash already distibuted among them all and the weapons (Arms cache) where the method of collecting the cash. I just wanted to put it into perpective in case it comes out and they have to explain - I give them a head start. Sorry

  • odupreez - 2012-03-15 12:43

The Cele's in the Police Force are all a little slow or (moedswillig ?). The one thinks a cache of weapons is a few revolvers and a few guns and the other signs papers without questions (hard to beleive)
