Johannesburg - The SA Army has appointed a new Sergeant Major, the department of defence said on Wednesday.
Senior Chief Warrant Officer Charles Alan Laubscher has been appointed to the position, filling a post that had been vacant since 2011.
Defence spokesperson Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga said Laubscher matriculated at Worcester High School in 1974 and joined the South African Defence Force on 8 January 1975.
"He was a founder member of the SA Army Intelligence Corps and the School of Intelligence, when the corps evolved from the then 11 Commando in 1982," said Mabanga.
"At the time of integration into the SA National Defence Force [SANDF] in 1994, he was posted to the SA Army Headquarters communication section.
He was tasked with the establishment and running of a communication team, to keep the other ranks informed on the integration process and resulting changes in the SANDF at the time," said Mabanga.
The Sergeant Major of the Army is responsible for looking after the interests of non-commissioned officers, as well as maintaining order and discipline.
The previous Sergeant Major, Motusi Kgaladi, was promoted.
