Johannesburg - A contingency from the South African National Defence Force arrived at Kya Sands informal settlement, north of Johannesburg, on Tuesday evening.
Eight armoured vehicles lined up next to the main road leading to Kya Sands, while soldiers were disembarking to be briefed before they proceeded to Extension 3.
Police officers at the scene told Sapa there were no incidents and the army was brought in to ensure there was calm in the area.
Soldiers and police will camp in Kya Sands to maintain calm, after violence believed to be related to xenophobia broke on Monday night.
Earlier, five people - four of whom were foreign nationals - were taken to hospital after they were attacked in their shacks between Monday night and early on Tuesday morning.
Twelve people were arrested, one of them for cable theft.
