Army declares war on obese soldiers

2012-08-30 10:25

Johannesburg - Nearly 10% of the SA Defence Force's 60 000 soldiers are overweight or obese, according to the findings of a provisional report that is being circulated among all army personnel, Beeld reported on Thursday.

Percentages in the report are based on information gathered by the SA Military Health Service (SAMHS) between April 2011 and March 2012.

The soldiers are being cautioned that they face potentially life-threatening lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and cardio-vascular issues if they don't slim down.

In addition, "the army can simply not be battle-ready with overweight soldiers. Everyone has to know that the fight against obesity is now official," the report states.

The soldiers are being encouraged to visit dieticians and establish a healthy eating plan and lifestyle.

All members of the SAMHS have to be weighed before Friday, and the statistics will be used in future projects aimed at encouraging army personnel to become more streamlined.

The SAMHS report uses the World Health Organisation's definition of body mass index (BMI).

Because they sit and do nothing and exceeding their "eating"allowance

      michael.vanrheenen.9 - 2012-08-30 10:49

      Eish... To much pap!!!

      Desilusionada - 2012-08-30 11:07

Gert, if you read the article between the lines, you will see that they are going to be asked to slim down, explained about these obesity sicknesses, and then will be given a choice to exercise or not. You see they not only sit and do nothing, but an order (eg PT Parade) in the army nowadays is a request and not an order any more. Orders are things that belonged in the stupid white man's apartheid army. The new democratic army of South Africa is the African example of how things should be done. Besides a weak army and a corrupt police force loyal to the politburo has never done any harm or evoked any fear of a coup, now did it??

      procold2 - 2012-08-30 11:08

"the army can simply not be battle-ready with overweight soldiers" if this wasnt so serious it would be funny, these people are our first line of defence, what a joke, fat, under equipped and under trained dont think the sandf will ever be battle ready, heaven help us even if only zim had to invade sa and i hear zimdf is aids ridden.

      buzz.bar.16 - 2012-08-30 14:11

No way it's only 10%. The amount of cammo clad muffin tops and saddle bags I see on a daily basis near a large military base is close to 50%.....

      buzz.bar.16 - 2012-08-30 14:36

It's all part of the army defence strategy. these fat soldiers will stop two bullets because of their size, not just 1...

  • gavin.lott.9 - 2012-08-30 10:40

I saw some army guys & gals at KFC yesterday...

  • richard.zanner - 2012-08-30 10:42

Off course they are fat and obese. They have nothing to do. We have 3 submarines all of which are out of action. One reversed into a wall, the other hit the bottom of the ocean and the third had it's electrics fried due to misuse. Our planes cannot fly as nobody is qualified to fly them and there is no fuel money.

      gavin.lott.9 - 2012-08-30 11:02

      Fuel is so overrated!

      catgirl1971 - 2012-08-30 11:59

SAS QUEEN MODJADJI 1 is back in the water so there is an operational submarine.

      justin.coetzee.5 - 2012-08-30 11:42

Wrong. Just this morning 3 Military Hospital had a fitness test. You have no clue what's going on being an outsider.

  • jackie.stone.501 - 2012-08-30 10:47

They must find something to do quickly(like invading Zim) instead of lazing around all day everyday ########################################## Wishing SA Paralympics team all the best ## ##########################################

Is South Africa serious, are we having only 60 000 soldiers, or I did not understand the sentence

      dirk.naude.12 - 2012-08-30 11:01

60 000 active military personel only, another couple million fit for military service, including you and me :)

  • dave.larkan.3 - 2012-08-30 10:48

only 10%, you have to be kidding.

      jackie.stone.501 - 2012-08-30 10:52

Yes 10% and the lady in the pic is the fattest.

  • BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-08-30 10:49

Damn good thing we're not at war. Hells Bells, that fat thing is supposed to be my security? It seems there's nothing the ANC can't stuff up one way or another. What a disgrace.

  • piet.leroux.754 - 2012-08-30 10:50

hahahaha cant stop laughing send those fatties to the cape flats maybe they can go on a tik diet...

  • nicky.rensburg.1 - 2012-08-30 10:51

Yeah, if I look at any other countries army/police etc, I can tell those people do some serious excercise in order to look the part... They are clearly proud to wear their uniforms. We can only speculate what the SA army/police are doing to stay in shape (or not)... it's shameful and embarrasing!

  • heihachi.mishima.7731 - 2012-08-30 10:53

used to be an daily 3 to 5k run and optional judo classes at night. no more i see

  • andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-08-30 10:53

Start with the minister of defence. It seems that they don't screen soldiers and police officers any more, they weigh them!

  • dirk.naude.12 - 2012-08-30 10:54

Can they even do 1 pullup?

  • tshepo.ally - 2012-08-30 10:55

    60 000?! that's it?

      dirk.naude.12 - 2012-08-30 11:08

Active duty, we probably don't require additional personel given the current situation. What we require is a larger police force. :)

      sbarnard2 - 2012-08-30 12:02

Funny... USA can drop more soldiers on our coast in half an hour... We should just totaly cancel our sandf.. It's become a job creation spot...

  • Provence - 2012-08-30 10:58

Where is the air force mama with her pink slippers and shopping trolley? Eish...we know nothing about training to fight...just training to eat!

  • trevor.pietersen.3 - 2012-08-30 11:00

    HAHAHA...What army

  • brent.goldwyer - 2012-08-30 11:03

60000 soldiers,,,,10 % are fat and obese and 65% have aids, 3 subs that have never gone to sea because they leak, and no one skinny enough to get on board the subs, eish too much pap and KFC

      sarel.brits - 2012-08-30 11:13

Atleast we know the fat onese don't have HIV

      catgirl1971 - 2012-08-30 11:43

Excuse me 3 subs that have never gone to sea? Both SAS CHARLOTTE MAXEKE and SAS QUEEN MODJADJE 1 have had extensive sea time. It is only SAS 'MANTHATISI that hasn't had much sea time. None of the subs leak; get your facts right before you make such an assinine comment!

      sbarnard2 - 2012-08-30 11:58

Ok... There's no windows in the subs.. 2 have been crashed ok.. Taxi driver needs windows..technology is a bit complicating.. Affirmative action can't make u a ship pilot over night...whahahahhaa

  • darryl.maze1 - 2012-08-30 11:04

Well what do you expect. Our army dont do anything except lay in there barracks all day and go to KFC. Even our police force is overweight and thats why criminals get away because our police are too fat. If we went into battle they would not die from enemy bullets but from heart attacks.

  • thomas.g.loeser - 2012-08-30 11:07

Haauw,.... and let's not stop there........ ironed uniforms?, polished shoes?.... the old story, if you don't have pride or discipline in yourself, then HTF!!!!

  • denton.estment - 2012-08-30 11:07

An Army moves on its stomach. They will never be able to move on theirs sic. wo2 rtd.

  • Riffak Traws - 2012-08-30 11:08

Even the SANDF chefs themselves are more fit than the fatsos they serve!

  • justice.league.9469 - 2012-08-30 11:08

Wonder if the standard bi-annual fitness test still applies? If you failed you had 3months to correct it, otherwise you would have been discharged from the service.

  • tin.can.501598 - 2012-08-30 11:09

Although short plump solidiers have advantage of a low center of gravity for maneuverability....They are pretty big targets for the enemy.

  • gkleingeld - 2012-08-30 11:12

    Ai, only in SA.

  • xozamandi - 2012-08-30 11:18

and the cops as well should do the same, gosh it's a nightmare...

  • linda.nzimamazibuko - 2012-08-30 11:22

Solution to this problem, SANDF should stop supplying oversize clothing gear as such would give indications to persons if they do not fit. Or have erect scales at entrance so as to indicate their weights daily, coming in and leaving the work place!

  • Tiaan Liebenberg - 2012-08-30 11:24

No, keep it as is. The fatties are extra ammo - form a rolling brigade. They can kill the enemy by rolling over them

  • charmaine.hoffmann.1 - 2012-08-30 11:32

Bwahahahaha!!! So what, is everyone going to look in the mirror and shoot himself or herself...so funny! This is a war!

  • schalkwbu31ger - 2012-08-30 11:49

I wonder what would the average 2.4km time be for this lot if they can do it

      andre.prinsloo.54 - 2012-10-18 00:19

No more times like 8.5 min with the worst time 11 min during the year 1978

  • BulletProof. - 2012-08-30 11:50

This is a disgrace, they spend the days watching TV instead of exercising, they are useless.

  • sbarnard2 - 2012-08-30 11:52

Battle ready???.. With what??... Most R4's are in criminal hands..I wonder if yesterdays R4 that was found is to be investigated.. Obese??... It's the good life.. No more drilling, exercising..laying on their duvets.. Go look at 1SAI.. I've witnessed it myself.. Go look in Kroonstad..witnessed it myself..

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-08-30 11:57

Hope they do the SAPS,Navy,Traffic Departments,Private Security etc etc. Wonder how they manage to chase criminals when one sees that they can hardly walk & are forever standing around and talking at the top of their voices to some one standing right next to them.

  • steve.ritchie.739 - 2012-08-30 12:07

Today's army is a far cry from what the SADF was. The SADF had discipline, fitness and was ready for any threat. The only overweight members were those with a valid medical problem.

  • gavin.hundermark - 2012-08-30 12:23

'Army declares war on obese soldiers', might I suggest that the obese soldiers will win?

  • mmezag.gaborone - 2012-08-30 12:31
