THE Department of Health plans to clamp down on illegal abortionists advertising their services on pamphlets in the city.

MEC for the Department of Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said backyard abortions have resulted in the deaths of many young women.

He was speaking during a budget debate in the provincial legislature where the department tabled a R32,9 billion budget for the 2015/16 financial year.

He said the so called safe abortions were illegal abortions and there is nothing safe about them. “These people feed [women wanting abortions] rubbish [to induce birth]. These women will get to the hospital and they are critically ill. We cannot help them quick enough because we do not know what they have taken.” He said Health would work with Community Safety and Liaison to arrest the illegal abortionists.

Dhlomo advised women who would want to have abortions, to ask about their choices at clinics. “If they insist that they want an abortion, then we could do it safely,” Dhlomo said. On the issue of mothers dying during birth, Dhlomo said the latest statistics showed a decline in the maternal mortality rate in KZN, but it was still too high. He said KZN Health was creating ‘mother waiting lodges’, where pregnant women who lived in rural areas that are far from hospitals could come to stay ahead of their due dates, and not have to rely on ambulance services during emergencies
