East London - The principal road safety officer for Arrive Alive in the Amathole district, East London, will appear in court on Monday on a charge of reckless and or negligent driving.
Zukile Makubalo, 33, was arrested on Friday after allegedly passing nine cars in the face of oncoming traffic at a painted traffic island on the Mdantsane Access road at the Robbie de Lange intersection in Wilsonia.
Inspector Stephen Marais said he would appear in the Wilsonia magistrate's court on Monday.
Makubalo, a former member of the provincial Arrive Alive committee, apparently approached the intersection, which is notoriously dangerous, from Mdantsane and allegedly overtook three vehicles in the painted island before pulling back into the traffic flow in a state vehicle.
Shortly afterwards he is alleged to have pulled out of the traffic flow again and overtaken a further six cars in the painted island in the face of oncoming traffic.
Makubalo was pulled over by a Buffalo City traffic official who witnessed the transgression.
He was arrested and charged with reckless and negligent driving.
Makubalo's duties as a road safety officer were to educate the public and school children about road safety as part of the Arrive Alive campaign.
