Mbombela - Sentencing of an Mpumalanga woman who forced her young niece to climb into a pit toilet to retrieve keys was postponed in the Nelspruit Regional Court on Wednesday.

The matter stood over because the 39-year-old woman's lawyer was sick.

The woman, from Msholozi near Mbombela, who cannot be named to protect the child's identity, was meant to be sentenced last Friday.

She was found guilty of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The matter had been set down for Wednesday for a pre-sentencing report from social services, but prosecutor Magda Marais said the convicted woman's lawyer Aggrey Machubeni was ill.

Marais asked Magistrate Andre Geldenhuys to postpone the case to another date.

Geldenhuys remanded her in custody and postponed the trial to 27 May for sentencing.

The court previously heard the abuse started in 2009 when the girl was 8 years old and only ended in December 2011 when neighbours alerted police.

When passing judgment on 8 April, Geldenhuys said the accused had lied in her testimony when she claimed the community made up the allegations in order to claim her property.
