Australian couple attacked in Cape Town

Cape Town - An Australian couple on their first visit to South Africa were attacked on Lion's Head in Cape Town on Sunday evening.

The couple, who didn't want to be identified, said they'd walked past three youths, one of whom suddenly tackled the woman to the ground.

When her husband came to her rescue, he was stabbed 3 times.

The attackers then ran off down-slope towards Signal Hill, taking the couple's bag containing a camera, credit cards and about R500 in cash.

Several hikers accompanied the couple back down to provide support and, as more than one expressed, because they no longer felt safe walking in ones or 2s.

Police, Table Mountain National Park rangers and emergency medical services responded to the incident, which left the couple bruised and shaken. 

"What was particularly disturbing about this attack was that it was so brazen," said a freelance journalist with Health24 Olivia Rose-Innes.

She added that the mountain was very busy with hikers and really seemed safe.

"Lion's Head in good weather on a weekend or after work during the week is considered one of the last safe parts of the mountain by many Capetonians and tourists.

"More visible patrols by TMNP rangers and SAP in recent years have also made mountain users feel more reassured, so this evening's attack was a shock," said Rose-Innes.
