Johannesburg - Authorities on Thursday dispersed a group of around 400 foreigners who had gathered in the Johannesburg CBD, the metro police department said.

Among the group were shop owners, shop assistants and family members of those who owned or worked in foreign-owned shops, said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

"The crowd was gathered on the corner of Delvers and Jeppe," Minnaar said.

It was believed the group had decided to gather out of fear of being attacked.

"They have been dispersed in order to normalise the situation," said Minnaar.

No attacks or incidents of xenophobic related violence had been reported in the CBD following clashes on Wednesday, which resulted in several people being injured.
