Mokopane - Residents of Galelia village in the Waterberg district municipality in Limpopo were relieved when a 23-year-old man accused of murder was denied bail in the Gilead Periodical Court.

Rufus Boshomane allegedly killed his girlfriend with an axe on June 21.

Galelia residents who packed the courtroom were visibly pleased when the magistrate turned down the suspect's bail application.

“The court denied bail because Boshomane's defence lawyers had not convinced it that he should be released on bail. He has not yet pleaded to the charge of murder,” said Gilead police spokesperson Constable George Kekana.

He said the police believed that Boshomane had killed his girlfriend, Kholo Manini, 20, because she had an affair with a man from a nearby village.

“The jealous-stricken Boshomane went to the village holding an axe and met her along the way,” said Kekana.

"A fight ensued and the suspect allegedly killed Manini with the axe."

Boshomane's case has been postponed to September 1.
